Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Wisconsin

Nora’s words hung in the suffocating silence of the study like a drawn blade. Adrian stood frozen, his pulse hammering against his ribs in violent, chaotic bursts. His wife was breathing. His little girl was sleeping just down the hall with blue marker washed from her hands and a lock of Vale white hair hidden beneath a pillow. The world had turned upside down in less than an hour.

""Tell me where she is,"" Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, deadly quiet. ""Give me an address. I’ll send a private security convoy right now.""

""You do that, and you kill her,"" Nora fired back, standing up to meet his intense gaze despite her trembling knees. ""Do you honestly think we survived on luck for four years, Adrian? Claire is hidden in a secure sanctuary house in rural Wisconsin, registered under an old medical trust that my deceased father established decades ago. She lives in total isolation. No phones. No internet. No digital footprint. She has lived like a ghost just so Maisie could have a future.""

Adrian paced behind his desk like a caged beast, his broad hands running through his dark hair. ""Then why bring Maisie here? Why bring my own child under my roof if you were trying to keep her safe from me?""

""Because three months ago, someone found our trail,"" Nora said, her voice dropping into a haunted whisper. ""A strange car started circling the gravel road near our cottage. Men in gray suits were asking questions at the local supply depot in town. Claire panicked. She realized our sanctuary was compromised, but her health had deteriorated severely from the chronic respiratory damage she suffered the night of her car crash. She was too weak to run again. She knew whoever was coming for her wasn't going to stop until both she and the baby were erased forever.""

Nora stepped closer, pointing a trembling finger at the photograph on the desk. ""Claire knew there was only one place on earth fortified heavily enough to keep a child safe from professional killers: Blackwood House. She told me, 'Adrian is a monster, but he protects what is his. Get Maisie inside his walls. Dye her white hair, hide her name, and let her live under his guard. He will protect her without even knowing she's his blood.' That’s why I took the maid's job, Adrian. I didn't come here for your money. I brought your daughter home so she wouldn't be murdered in the dark.""

Outside the heavy oak doors, the faint click of a floorboard broke Adrian’s train of thought. He signaled Nora to silence with a quick, sharp gesture of his palm. His instincts, sharpened by fifteen years of brutal syndicate warfare, snapped instantly back into place. He quietly crossed the thick carpet, drew a short tactical blade from beneath his coat, and suddenly ripped the double doors open.

Cole Mercer stood on the other side, his hand raised as if he had just been preparing to knock.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed into slits. ""You're eavesdropping, Cole?""

""Never, boss,"" Cole said smoothly, though a flicker of unease crossed his rigid features. ""The perimeter sensors just tripped on the north gate. A commercial black utility van slipped past the outer cameras five minutes ago. Whoever they are, they bypassed the secondary keypad using an override code. Only three people hold that code, Adrian.""

Adrian’s jaw tightened. ""Who?""

""You, me... and my father, Walter.""
