Plot

Chapter 3 - The Wolf in the Fold

Adrian felt a deep chill cut beneath his skin, colder than any Chicago winter. Walter Mercer had stood beside him when his own father was buried in a family plot surrounded by armed guards. Walter had held the Vale syndicate together when Adrian was barely twenty-two years old, teaching him how to balance ledgers, intimidate rivals, and negotiate treaties with politicians. He had called Walter 'uncle' for over thirty years.

""Cole,"" Adrian said, keeping his voice dead and emotionless, ""where is your father right now?""

""He's in the secure communications hub in the west wing,"" Cole answered, his jaw tightening visibly. ""He told me he was reviewing quarterly logistics manifests for our shipping docks on the south side. But the override that opened the north gate originated from his terminal, Adrian. I... I didn't want to believe it. I ran the internal audit three times before I came up these stairs.""

Adrian looked at his head of security. Cole had been his shadow since they were teenagers, loyal to a fault, but Walter was Cole's father. Blood was notoriously thick in their world, and betrayal usually ran along family lines. Adrian gripped the hilt of his weapon, calculating the risks in a fraction of a second.

""If your father betrayed my house, Cole,"" Adrian said coldly, ""whose side are you standing on?""

Cole did not flinch. He slowly unholstered his custom sidearm, flipped the heavy grip in his palm, and handed it directly to Adrian, butt-first. ""My father crossed the line the day he drove Claire away from this house. If he brought gunmen to Blackwood tonight while a three-year-old girl is sleeping upstairs, he's not my father anymore. He's an enemy combatant.""

Adrian stared at the weapon for a heartbeat, then pushed it back into Cole’s hand. ""Take Nora upstairs to Maisie’s room immediately. Lock the reinforced panic doors and do not open them for anyone except me. If anything happens to that little girl, Cole, don't bother asking for mercy.""

""Understood,"" Cole whispered, grabbing Nora’s arm gently and pulling her toward the private elevator.

Adrian walked down the grand marble staircase alone. The soft patter of rain outside was suddenly shattered by the distant, muffled pop of a silenced gunshot near the perimeter wall. The outer security guards had been neutralized with surgical precision. Professional contractors. Not street muscle, but paid mercenaries brought in from out of state to clean up loose ends.

Adrian rounded the corner into the west wing communications room. The door stood slightly ajar, spilling cold fluorescent light into the darkened corridor. Inside sat Walter Mercer, his gray hair neatly combed, an open bottle of vintage scotch resting beside an illuminated bank of surveillance screens.

Walter didn't turn around when Adrian entered. He simply took a slow, measured sip of his amber drink.

""You always walked too quietly, Adrian,"" Walter murmured, staring at the camera feed showing armed figures in tactical gear moving through the courtyard. ""Just like your father used to. You both had that same arrogant habit of believing you were untouchable.""

Adrian stopped three feet behind him, his dark eyes burning with unbridled wrath. ""You framed Claire. You planted the shell accounts. You staged the photos.""

Walter gave a heavy, tired sigh and set his glass down on the counter. ""Claire was a cancer to this organization. She was soft. She was convincing you to legitimize the shipping routes, divest from the casinos, and go clean. She was stripping this family of its teeth, Adrian. Your father didn't spill blood for forty years just so a pretty blonde girl from Ohio could turn the Vale empire into a tax-paying charity.""

""She was carrying my child, Walter!"" Adrian's roar shook the framed maps on the walls.

Walter finally spun around in his swivel chair, his weathered face twisted into a cold, ruthless sneer. ""And that was the biggest mistake of all. An heir gives you a reason to surrender. A daughter gives you an excuse to show mercy. So tonight, nephew, the Vale line ends here. And Mercer Logistics takes over tomorrow morning.""
