Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Moretti

The purge within the Vale family sent shockwaves through the regional criminal landscape, but the external threat remained unresolved. Don Moretti, the cunning boss of the rival New York-based syndicate, was not a man to accept the loss of a twelve-million-dollar buyout quietly. Having lost his insider puppet in Luca, Moretti chose brute force.
Three days after the boardroom meeting, as the afternoon sun dipped behind the Hartford skyline, Adrian’s private intelligence intercepted an encrypted transmission. Moretti had hired a specialized team of offshore mercenaries to strike the Vale estate, hoping to decapitate the leadership while Adrian was reorganizing his ranks.
""They think we are vulnerable,"" Marco reported, standing inside Adrian’s private study where maps of the estate were spread across the desk. ""They’re moving through the forested ridge behind the north perimeter. Estimated twenty men, military-grade gear. They want blood, Boss.""
Adrian stood by the window, watching the rain mist across the vast gardens below. ""They think my home is weak because they believe my focus is divided. Let them come.""
He turned to Marco. ""Where is Emma?""
""She is in the lower library with her brother Julian. Julian arrived from the hospital this morning; he's resting comfortably. The reinforced panic room is ready.""
Adrian nodded and walked down the grand spiral staircase to the lower library. Emma was sitting by Julian’s wheelchair, reading quietly from a leather-bound book while her brother slept peacefully under a warm blanket. When she heard Adrian’s footsteps, she looked up, instantly sensing the tension in his rigid shoulders.
""It's Moretti, isn't it?"" she asked softly, placing the book aside.
Adrian knelt before her, taking her small hands into his. ""They are coming tonight, Emma. I need you and Julian to go into the subterranean vault. It has its own air supply, independent power, and six inches of reinforced titanium. Even if they bring down the entire house, you will be untouchable.""
Emma stared into his dark eyes, searching his soul. For the first time, she saw not cold indifference, but a deep, burning fear—not for his own life, but for hers.
""Promise me you won't throw your life away out of pride, Adrian,"" she whispered, her hands gripping his cheeks. ""I spent two years believing I was unloved. I only just found you. Don't leave me alone in this world.""

Adrian felt his throat tighten. He leaned in and pressed a fierce, lingering kiss against her lips, pouring every unspoken emotion, every year of quiet longing, into that single embrace. When he pulled back, his eyes were blazing with lethal determination.
""I won't leave you, Emma,"" he vowed, resting his forehead against hers. ""I survived wars to build this kingdom. I will burn Moretti’s men to ash before I let them touch a single hair on your head. Go with Marco. When the door opens again, it will be my hand turning the key.""
