Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls

The silence in Bellavere cracked wide open. Emma’s accusation hung in the perfumed air like toxic gas. For two years, she had played the role of the docile, insignificant wife, married off to the feared syndicate boss Adrian Vale to settle her late father’s lingering debts. Adrian had kept his distance, believing she despised him and the violent world he commanded. He had provided an endless bank account, a sprawling estate, and complete solitude, mistaking her quiet compliance for hatred.
Now, looking at her shivering frame and bruised throat, Adrian realized the terrifying truth: her silence had not been hatred. It had been sheer, unrelenting terror.
Luca’s expression shifted instantly. The easy, boyish charm evaporated, replaced by an ugly, defensive sneer that Adrian had witnessed only during back-alley interrogations. ""You stupid little bitch,"" Luca hissed, abandoning all pretense of brotherly decorum. ""You think Adrian can save you? He doesn't even know what year it is in his own empire! He’s been hiding behind his legitimate shipping fronts while I did the actual dirty work that kept this family afloat!""
""Luca, shut your mouth!"" Helena commanded, but her voice held none of its previous authority. She looked terrified, realizing the monster she had coddled had just pulled the pin on a live grenade.
Adrian didn’t blink. He slowly unbuttoned his cuffs and rolled his sleeves up to his forearms. ""The shipping ledgers,"" Adrian stated, putting the pieces together with chilling clarity. ""The missing manifest reports from the Boston docks last winter. The federal agents sniffing around my personal accounts. It wasn't an external mole. It was you.""
""You grew soft, Adrian!"" Luca shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. Several civic officials and corrupt judges began discreetly slipping toward the rear fire exits, realizing blood was about to be spilled on the vintage rugs. ""You married this weak, pathetic girl to play house! You forgot who we are! Our father didn't build an empire so you could turn it into a charity foundation! I took what was mine. I squeezed her because she had access to your private vault in the library. And when she refused to steal your personal authentication keys, I reminded her what happens to girls who forget their place.""
Emma stepped closer to Adrian, tears spilling down her pale cheeks, catching the glow of the amber lights. ""He came to the house while you were in Chicago last month, Adrian. He said you were setting me up to take the fall for the port smuggling. He swore that if I uttered a single syllable, he would have my brother killed in his hospital bed and make sure you thought I betrayed you. I had no one. You were always so distant... I thought you hated me.""
Adrian felt a physical blow strike his chest. Her words cut deeper than any blade ever had. He had built walls around his heart to protect her from his darkness, never realizing those very walls left her exposed to the wolves sleeping under his own roof.
""Look at me, Emma,"" Adrian commanded gently, his voice softening only for her.
She turned her tearful eyes to his.
May you like
""I never hated you,"" he said, loud enough for every traitor in the room to hear. ""I stayed away because I thought a monster like me would poison someone as pure as you. But I was wrong. The real monster was sitting at the head of my table.""
Adrian turned his attention back to his younger brother. His eyes were devoid of any familial warmth; they were the pitch-black eyes of the undisputed boss who had buried every rival that ever crossed his perimeter. ""Luca. You have precisely sixty seconds to explain why I shouldn't tear out your throat with my bare hands right in front of Mother.""
