Chapter 1 - The Bloodline Debt

Adrian kept his suit jacket wrapped firmly around Emma’s slender shoulders, pulling the heavy fabric upward until the ugly, purple choke marks were sealed away from the stares of one hundred and sixteen guests. The dining room of Bellavere was suffocatingly still. Crystal chandeliers hummed faintly overhead, reflecting against polished silverware that no one dared pick up. Adrian’s gaze drifted from his wife’s trembling lips back toward the center of the head table. Luca stood frozen beside his empty champagne flute, the charming grin wiped clean off his tan, sculpted face.
""Adrian, don't,"" Emma whispered, her voice cracking beneath the weight of suffocating panic. Her small fingers dug desperately into the sleeve of his crisp shirt. ""You don't understand what he’ll do. You don’t understand what they hold over me. Please, just take me home. Just walk away.""
Adrian did not look back down at her. His instincts, sharpened by a decade of ruthless dominance over the Northeast syndicate, had already calculated every exit, every hidden weapon, and every treasonous heartbeat in the banquet hall. ""No more running, Emma. Not in my house. Not under my name.""
He turned his body fully toward the raised platform, stepping away from the drafty kitchen door where his wife had been relegated like a stray animal. His gait was measured, unhurried, each step echoing against the marble like a death knell. The family’s top enforcers, stationed along the wood-paneled walls, exchanged nervous glances. They were men loyal to the Vale banner, but in recent months, paychecks had begun arriving signed with Luca’s seal, not Adrian’s.
""You look troubled, little brother,"" Adrian said softly, reaching the edge of the dais. He didn’t shout. He never needed to. His tone was a razor sliding across silk. ""A moment ago, you were lecturing this room on honor and debts that cannot be escaped. Let us talk about debts.""
Helena Vale, their matriarch, slammed her diamond-ringed palm onto the linen table runner. ""Adrian! Control yourself! This night belongs to Luca’s appointment to the port authorities. The city council is watching. The judges are watching. Sit down and stop making a vulgar spectacle over domestic nonsense.""
Adrian’s jaw hardened, his dark eyes cutting toward his mother with a coldness that made the older woman shrink back into her high-backed chair. ""Domestic nonsense, Mother? Did you choose her table tonight? Did you ensure she sat next to the swinging pantry door so none of your high-society friends had to smell the stench of her quiet suffering?""
Luca cleared his throat, trying desperately to recapture the magnetic charisma that had won him the favor of the room. He adjusted the lapels of his midnight-blue tuxedo, taking a step forward with palms open, mimicking innocence. ""Adrian, look around. You’re stressed from the federal audits. We all know how much pressure you’ve been under. If Emma had a fall, or if there's some misunderstanding between you two, we can call Dr. Marchetti. There’s no reason to embarrass our guests or ruin this celebration.""
""A fall?"" Adrian tilted his head, a cruel smirk playing on his lips. ""She had a fall that left four finger-shaped indentations around her windpipe, perfectly spaced to match the hand of a man wearing a signet ring with our father’s crest?""
May you like
The room collectively gasped. Luca instinctively tucked his right hand behind his back, but the movement was too late. Every veteran soldier in the room recognized the gesture. Luca wore their father’s heirloom gold signet ring on his pinky finger.
Emma stepped forward, her voice shaking violently as she stepped into the spotlight she had avoided for two agonizing years. ""It wasn't an accident, Luca. Tell him about the warehouse. Tell him what you threatened to do to my brother if I didn't stay quiet and hand over Adrian's private ledgers.""
