Chapter 6 - Cleaning House

The following dawn broke over the city in shades of slate gray and biting winter wind. While Emma slept peacefully under the influence of the doctor's medicine, Adrian Vale entered the basement facility beneath an abandoned textile warehouse on 4th Street.
The concrete room smelled of damp stone, rust, and fear. Luca Vale was tied securely to a heavy metal chair in the center of the floor, his designer tuxedo torn and stained with dirt. His lip was split, his left hand heavily wrapped where his finger had been dislocated, and the cocky arrogance that usually defined his posture had decayed into whimpering panic.
Marco stood in the corner, holding a thick leather dossier, flanked by two stone-faced enforcers.
The heavy steel door slammed shut as Adrian entered. The sound was like a gunshot, making Luca flinch violently.
""Adrian! Listen to me!"" Luca pleaded, his voice hoarse from hours of futile shouting. ""It was the Moretti family! They pressured me! They said if I didn't hand over the Boston shipping lanes, they would wipe out our entire southern distribution! I only put pressure on Emma to save us! I had to find your security codes to protect the family!""
Adrian walked over to the small wooden table where Marco had laid out the contents of Luca’s personal safe. He picked up a thick stack of bank slips, foreign passports, and signed transfer deeds.
""You really think I am an idiot, Luca?"" Adrian said quietly, flipping through the documents. ""These offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands are in your name alone. The contract with the Morettis wasn't a defense pact; it was a buyout. You sold out our dockworkers for twelve million dollars and a guaranteed seat on their board. You were planning to liquidate my assets, frame me for treason against the Commission, and step over my corpse.""
Luca swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically. ""Adrian, we’re blood! You can’t kill your own brother! What would Father say? What will Mother do?""
""Mother knew,"" Adrian said coldly, turning to look down at him.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
""What?"" Luca stammered.
""Mother knew you were taking kickbacks from the Morettis,"" Adrian continued, his voice devoid of emotion. ""She didn't know about the bruises on Emma’s neck, because even in her vanity, she wouldn't stomach that. But she knew you were planning a coup. She allowed it because she always favored you. She thought I was too ruthless, too rigid, too unyielding. She thought you would be easier to control.""
Adrian dropped the financial papers onto the floor. ""Mother has already been placed on a private flight to our family estate in Sicily. Her access to all trust funds and corporate accounts has been permanently revoked. She will spend the rest of her days tending olive trees under armed supervision, never to set foot in America again.""
Luca’s breath hitched in his throat. The realization that their untouchable mother had been dismantled overnight shattered his last delusion of safety. ""And me? What are you going to do to me?""
Adrian stepped directly in front of his brother. He pulled a silver pen from his pocket and tossed it onto Luca’s lap, followed by a relinquishment deed that stripped Luca of every asset, property, and title within the Vale syndicate.
""Sign it,"" Adrian ordered.

""And then?"" Luca asked, his voice shaking with terror. ""You let me go?""
""You signed your death warrant the second your hands touched my wife's throat,"" Adrian said with absolute finality. ""Sign the papers, Luca. Sign them, and Marco will ensure your departure from this world is swift. Refuse, and I will let Emma’s brother decide how many bones we break before you draw your last breath.""
