Chapter 4 - Safe Harbor

The sleek black sedan sped through the rain-slicked streets of Hartford, heading west toward Adrian's private estate in the hills. Inside the leather-lined interior, the only sound was the rhythmic sweeping of the windshield wipers and Emma’s shallow breathing. The gold necklace that had served as her gilded cage lay crumpled on the center console, discarded and worthless.

Emma leaned against the passenger door, clutching Adrian's oversized jacket around her petite frame. She felt dizzy, running on pure adrenaline and sheer exhaustion. For months, every waking moment had been consumed by the fear of Luca’s threats, wondering when the inevitable bullet would end her brother’s life or her own. Now, sitting beside her husband, the overwhelming reality of her freedom began to set in.

Adrian kept one hand on the steering wheel while his other reached across the console, hovering hesitatingly before resting over her cold knuckles. ""Are you in pain?"" he asked softly.

She looked down at his large, calloused hand covering hers. ""Everything hurts, Adrian. But for the first time in two years, I can breathe.""

""I am sorry, Emma,"" he murmured, his deep voice thick with genuine remorse. ""I built an empire claiming it would provide security, yet I allowed an enemy to torture you beneath my own roof. I failed you as a husband, and I failed you as a protector.""

""You didn't know,"" she said quietly, turning her head toward him. ""Luca made sure you didn't. He told me you knew everything. He told me you were using my family's debt as leverage, that you laughed when he suggested keeping me locked away in the guest wing. He made me believe you were a monster who looked at me with disgust.""

Adrian’s grip tightened on the wheel, his knuckles turning white. ""I looked away because I thought you despised me. The day we married, you were trembling so hard you could barely say your vows. I swore that day I would never force myself into your life. I gave you your own wing of the house, your own staff, your own freedom—or so I foolishly believed. I thought leaving you alone was the only mercy I could offer.""

Emma let out a ragged, bittersweet laugh through her tears. ""Mercy? Adrian, I was dying of loneliness. Every time you walked past me without speaking, it felt like an execution. And Luca saw that distance. He weaponized it.""

The car turned up the long, winding private driveway of the estate, passing through wrought-iron security gates guarded by heavily armed sentries. The massive stone manor loomed ahead, warm lights glowing from the high arched windows.

When the car came to a stop, Adrian didn't wait for his drivers. He stepped out into the rain, rounded the car, and opened Emma’s door. Without asking, he slid his arms under her knees and back, lifting her gently against his chest. Emma gasped in surprise, but instinct took over, and she buried her face into the curve of his neck, inhaling the intoxicating scent of cedarwood, rain, and cold leather.

""Dr. Elena is already inside waiting for us,"" Adrian whispered as he carried her up the stone steps. ""We will tend to your injuries. We will check on your brother—Marco has already dispatched four men to secure his hospital wing. You are safe now, Emma. The nightmare ends tonight.""
