Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Purge

Two weeks later, the Mercer Corporate Center in Manhattan stood under clear, freezing skies. Inside the 40th-floor executive boardroom, thirty board members, legal counsels, and department heads sat in heavy, uneasy silence around the forty-foot glass table.

For decades, this room had belonged to Raymond Mercer. His hand-picked cronies occupied half the seats—men who had turned a blind eye to inflated shipping invoices, unverified overseas grants, and mysterious shell corporate entities in exchange for generous annual bonuses and private jet privileges.

The heavy double doors opened.

Hannah Mercer walked in, flanked by Gabriel and Special Agent Vance’s senior forensic liaison. Hannah wore a tailored navy maternity suit, her expression composed, authoritative, and unreadable. She walked straight to the head of the table—Raymond’s former seat—and pulled out the high-backed leather chair.

She sat down.

Gabriel took the seat directly to her right.

""Good morning, gentlemen,"" Hannah said, folding her hands over the legal dossiers laid out before her. ""We have a great deal of work to do.""

A senior vice president cleared his throat nervously. ""Mrs. Mercer, while we all deeply regret the... unfortunate circumstances surrounding Raymond’s legal troubles, the executive committee believes that bringing in outside legal consultants to review the foundation’s operations would be premature. We should handle this internally to protect market value.""

Hannah didn't raise her voice. She simply slid four thick blue folders across the glass surface.

""In those folders, Mr. Sterling, are the digital access logs from November fourteenth,"" Hannah said, her gaze pinning the executive to his chair. ""Three of you in this room logged into the secondary logistics portal to authorize container manifests that Raymond had flagged for expedited maritime clearance. You didn't ask questions because Raymond promised you executive stock options upon the successful close of the quarter.""

The room went ice cold. The vice president’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

""This is not a negotiation,"" Gabriel announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority. ""The United States Attorney's Office has agreed to offer corporate leniency to the Mercer Foundation under one condition: complete, unreserved transparency. Every individual who signed an unauthorized voucher, every director who approved an unverified subcontractor, and every person who looked the other way when Owen Keane raised the alarm will submit their immediate resignations by noon today.""

Gabriel stood up, leaning forward with his palms flat against the table. ""If your resignation is on my desk by twelve o’clock, the company will not pursue civil damages against your personal assets. If you are still sitting in those chairs at twelve-zero-one, Agent Vance will meet you in the lobby with federal subpoenas.""

Within five minutes, four directors stood up, collected their briefcases without saying a single word, and filed out of the room like ghosts.

Hannah watched them leave, feeling the baby kick with a sudden, energetic rhythm. She touched her abdomen, smiling faintly to herself.

The Mercer family had spent decades building wealth out of fear, compromise, and polite silence. That era was over. The house was clean, the poison was drained, and the legacy that her daughter would inherit would be built on truth.
