Chapter 5 - The Raid at Westchester

The roar of high-performance engines shattered the quiet Westchester night before the blue and red emergency strobes even cut through the heavy downpour.
Three black tactical SUVs surged up the long, curving gravel driveway, their tires churning up mud and throwing loose stone against the manicured boxwood hedges. Headlights bathed the front facade of the Mercer mansion in harsh, blinding white light.
Upstairs in the second-floor study, Raymond’s pen froze millimeter above the signature line of the authorization addendum.
""What the hell is that?"" Raymond hissed, lunging toward the window.
Through the rain-streaked glass, he saw six federal agents in tactical gear with yellow letters blazing across their windbreakers: FBI - FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION.
Raymond spun around, his silver hair disheveled, his eyes wild with feral realization. He slammed his fist down onto Gabriel’s desk. ""You bastard! You called the feds on your own family? You signed your own death warrant, Gabe! My lawyers will bury you under twenty counts of corporate conspiracy before sunrise!""
Gabriel didn't flinch. He didn't even stand up. He calmly reached over to the laptop, pressed a key sequence, and rotated the screen toward his uncle.
On the monitor, a progress bar displayed: FILE TRANSMISSION COMPLETE. MIRRORED TO SDNY SECURE REPOSITORY.
""I didn't call them, Raymond,"" Gabriel said in a voice that cut like ice water. ""Hannah did.""
The study door was kicked open with a concussive bang that shook the mahogany bookshelves.
""FEDERAL AGENTS! STEP AWAY FROM THE DESK AND PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!""
Special Agent Marcus Vance stood in the doorway, weapon drawn, flanked by two armed tactical officers. Vance was a tall, weathered man with the quiet intensity of an investigator who had spent years hunting white-collar predators.
Raymond stepped back, his chest heaving, his cultivated aristocratic charm collapsing into a snarl. ""Do you know who I am? I am the chairman emeritus of the Mercer Foundation! My attorneys will have your badges by midnight! This is private property!""
""Raymond Mercer, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Owen Keane,"" Agent Vance recited with brutal indifference, stepping forward and clamping cold steel handcuffs around Raymond's wrists.
""Murder? That’s absurd! You have no proof!"" Raymond screamed, thrashing against the agent’s grip as he was forced face-down against the mahogany desk he had used for decades to manipulate his family.
""We have Owen Keane's digital archive, retrieved from your private cloud mirror ten minutes ago,"" Vance said, leaning down to Raymond's ear. ""And we have your live confession transmitted over an encrypted audio link authorized under an emergency Title III warrant signed by a federal judge at four o'clock this afternoon.""
Raymond twisted his neck, his veins bulging against his collar as they dragged him out into the hallway.
At the top of the grand staircase, Hannah was waiting.
She stood tall, hands folded serenely over her stomach, watching her husband's tormentor being marched down the marble steps in steel cuffs.
Raymond glared at her, his face contorted in vicious, spit-flecked rage. ""You... you set this up! You used that Keane woman! You manipulative little tramp!""

Hannah didn't blink. She took one step forward, her gaze cutting through him like a diamond blade.
""I gave her my seat at your table, Uncle Ray,"" Hannah whispered so coldly that the federal agents instinctively paused. ""Because I knew the only seat waiting for you... was in a federal holding cell.""
