Chapter 6 - Unmasked

The living room of the Mercer estate felt cavernous and empty after the federal vehicles departed, their sirens echoing into the rainy night. Outside, two local police cruisers remained parked at the entrance gates to keep reporters at bay, their lights sweeping rhythmic swathes of red and blue across the antique wallpaper.
Patricia Mercer sat huddled by the dying embers of the hearth, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, sipping tea with trembling hands. The proud matriarch had aged ten years in the span of an hour.
""Eleven years,"" Patricia murmured into her teacup, her voice cracked. ""He took my brother's company, my husband's legacy, and used us as human shields. And I thought... I thought you were bringing shame upon us tonight, Hannah.""
Hannah walked over, sitting beside her mother-in-law on the sofa. She placed a gentle, grounding hand on Patricia's shoulder. ""Raymond counted on our pride, Patricia. He knew that the Mercers would do anything to avoid a public scandal. He used your fear of embarrassment to build his empire in the shadows.""
Gabriel walked into the room, his tie completely undone, his white shirt sleeves rolled to the elbows. He carried a heavy manila folder—the original, uncorrupted foundation records that Diane Keller had verified just hours before the raid.
He stopped in front of Mallory Keane, who sat silently in an armchair near the window.
Gabriel dropped to one knee, looking up at the woman whose life his family had nearly destroyed. ""Mallory, there are no words in the English language that can undo the terror Raymond put you and Ethan through. But tomorrow morning, the Mercer Foundation will establish an irrevocable trust in Ethan's name. Every penny Owen was cheated out of, every royalty, every ounce of compensation for his wrongful death... it will be paid. And you will never have to look over your shoulder again.""
Mallory touched Gabriel's shoulder, her tears falling freely now—not from terror, but from the sudden, disorienting relief of survival. ""Owen told me you were a good man, Gabriel. He told me that when the truth came out, you would make it right. Thank you for listening to Hannah.""
Gabriel looked up at his wife. The exhaustion in his eyes was profound, but beneath it was an overwhelming, reverent awe.
""How did you know?"" Gabriel asked, his voice thick with emotion. ""When did you figure out that I wasn't cheating on you?""
Hannah allowed herself a tiny, tired smile. ""The perfume, Gabriel. You're an awful liar, but you’re an even worse degenerate. You’ve loved me since we were twenty-one years old. When you came home at four in the morning and kissed my forehead, your hands were shaking. A man sneaking around with a mistress has guilt in his eyes. You had terror. You were trying to carry the weight of an entire syndicate on your back to keep the baby and me safe.""
Gabriel stood up, wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his face into the curve of her neck. He held her with a desperate, crushing tenderness, as if letting go would cause the world to shatter.

""I was so terrified,"" Gabriel whispered against her skin, his tears dampening the emerald velvet of her dress. ""Raymond swore that if I went to the police, his men would cause an accident on your way to the hospital. He said what happened to Owen could happen to anyone on Route 9. I thought if I played along until the baby was born, I could find a way out.""
""You don't fight monsters with patience, Gabriel,"" Hannah murmured, resting her cheek against his hair. ""You fight them with sunlight.""
