Chapter 10 - The True Seat

On a brilliant, crisp morning in late February, the master bedroom of the Mercer estate was filled with the soft, sweet scent of lavender and fresh linen.

Sunlight poured through the tall windows, illuminating a hand-carved mahogany bassinet that Gabriel had spent three weekends assembling with his own hands. Inside, swaddled in pale pink organic cotton, slept Clara Grace Mercer—eight pounds, two ounces of perfect, healthy new life.

Gabriel sat on the edge of the mattress, his face illuminated by a gentle, doting wonder as he held his daughter’s tiny, translucent hand against his thumb. Her miniature fingers curled tightly around his knuckle, holding fast.

""She has your nose, Hannah,"" Gabriel whispered, as if speaking too loudly would break the enchantment of the room. ""And God help anyone who crosses her... she has your eyes.""

Hannah laughed softly from the bed, propped up against a mountain of plush pillows, a mug of warm chamomile tea resting on the nightstand. She looked radiant, rested, and utterly whole. The shadow of past grief and miscarriage had finally dissolved, replaced by the deep, unshakable warmth of motherhood.

There was a light tap at the door, and the housekeeper peeked in with a wide smile. ""Mr. and Mrs. Mercer, your lunch guests have arrived.""

Downstairs in the sunlit conservatory, a long glass table had been set for five. Outside the French doors, spring bulbs were already beginning to push their green shoots through the thawing earth.

Mallory Keane and Ethan sat near the garden window, laughing with Patricia over photos of Ethan’s latest soccer game. When Hannah and Gabriel entered the room, Gabriel carrying baby Clara nestled against his chest, the entire room stood up in unison.

Ethan ran forward on tiptoes, his eyes shining with awe. ""Can I see her? Is she sleeping?""

""She's awake, Ethan,"" Gabriel smiled, crouching down so the boy could look into the baby's bright, dark eyes. ""Clara, this is your big brother Ethan. He's going to teach you how to build model boats.""

Ethan beamed with immense pride, gently touching Clara's tiny blanket. ""I promise I'll protect her, Mr. Gabriel.""

Patricia wiped a tear from her eye, turning toward the head of the table.

At the center of the conservatory stood the carved mahogany chairs. For eleven years, Gabriel had sat at the head, isolated by corporate duty, while Hannah sat beside him, playing the role of the quiet socialite wife.

Gabriel walked over to the head of the table. But instead of sitting down, he pulled out the grand armchair and turned toward his wife.

""Take your seat, Hannah,"" Gabriel said, his voice rich with unconditional love and unyielding respect.

Hannah looked at him, surprised. ""Gabriel, that's your chair.""

""No,"" Gabriel smiled, taking Clara gently in his left arm and extending his right hand to Hannah. ""For eleven years, I sat at the head of this family thinking leadership was a burden a man carried alone. But you showed me what true leadership looks like. You protected our family, you delivered justice for Owen, and you rebuilt our foundation on truth. This house doesn't belong to the past anymore. It belongs to you.""

Hannah walked forward, her hand sliding into Gabriel's, their fingers locking together with a strength forged through fire.

She looked around the table—at Patricia smiling with tears of genuine pride, at Mallory thriving and secure, at Ethan laughing in the afternoon sun, and at her beautiful, healthy daughter cradled safely in her husband’s arms.

Hannah sat down at the head of the table.

The chair didn't feel heavy. It felt right.

Outside, the last traces of winter melted into the rich earth, making way for the blooming spring. The trap had closed, the shadows were gone, and the Mercer family was finally home."
