Chapter 1 - The Other Side of the Cup

Mallory flinched as if Hannah had struck her across the face. Around them, the din of Grand Central commuters drifted like white noise—clattering porcelain, hissed espresso steam, the low roar of footsteps across polished marble. Outside, late autumn rain coated the glass windows in gray streaks, mirroring the chill settled in Hannah’s bones.
""I am not sleeping with Gabriel,"" Mallory said. Her voice was cracked, thin, and hollow, trembling beneath the weight of utter exhaustion. She pulled her sleeves over her knuckles, eyes darting toward the street entrance every few seconds. ""I never have. Not once.""
Hannah sat perfectly upright, hands resting protectively over her swollen belly. ""Don't insult my intelligence, Mallory. Gabriel was on the phone with you at four in the morning. He smelled like vanilla and jasmine—the exact scent you're wearing right now. And I’ve tracked the money.""
""The perfume is what Raymond Mercer bought me three months ago,"" Mallory whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. ""He told me if I ever stopped wearing it, Ethan wouldn't make it to his ninth birthday.""
The air left Hannah’s chest. The cafe suddenly felt suffocatingly warm. Her daughter fluttered softly against her ribs, a gentle reminder of the fragile reality she carried. ""Raymond?""
""My husband Owen didn't die in an accident, Mrs. Mercer,"" Mallory whispered, leaning across the small wooden table so closely that Hannah could see the bruised shadows under her eyes. ""Owen was the senior logistics director for Mercer Shipping. Two years ago, he discovered that Raymond was using foundation aid shipments to move offshore funds and unregistered cargo through the Hudson terminals. Owen told your husband. But Gabriel was too young, too newly appointed, and too blinded by loyalty to Uncle Ray to believe him.""
Mallory choked back a sob, quickly catching herself. ""Two weeks after Owen confronted Raymond, his brakes failed on Route 9. A truck plowed straight into his driver’s side door. The police called it wet asphalt and mechanical failure. But Owen left me a digital key hidden in our home router. It contained scanned bills of lading, account transfers, and audio recordings of Raymond threatening him.""
Hannah’s hand tightened around her paper coffee cup, crumpling the cardboard. ""If Gabriel isn't your lover, why was he whispering to you at dawn? Why did he come home smelling like you?""
""Because Gabriel finally found the discrepancies two weeks ago,"" Mallory confessed, her fingers trembling against her knees. ""He remembered what Owen said before he died. He realized his uncle had built a shadow empire inside your family foundation. Gabriel tracked me down to apologize, to offer me police protection, and to beg for Owen's files. But Raymond has ears everywhere. Two days ago, Raymond’s men intercepted me near my apartment. They cornered me. They forced me into Raymond's car. That's when Raymond planted his phone and his threats, and Gabriel had to physically step between us behind my apartment complex to get Raymond off me. Gabriel threw his jacket over me because Raymond ripped my sweater. That's where the perfume came from. Gabriel has been trying to protect Ethan and me without tipping off his uncle.""
Hannah felt the puzzle pieces clatter violently into place. Gabriel's late nights. His distant, tormented gaze. The cold dread in his eyes whenever Raymond clapped his shoulder at family board meetings. Gabriel hadn't been sneaking off to indulge in a tawdry affair; he was trying to solve a corporate murder without dragging his pregnant wife into the line of fire.
""And you sent me that photo of Ethan?"" Hannah asked, her voice dropping to a sharp murmur.
""I had to,"" Mallory whispered. ""Raymond told me that if Gabriel went to the federal authorities, he would frame Gabriel for embezzlement using forged digital signatures on the foundation accounts. Raymond said Gabriel would go to prison for twenty years, and Ethan would be an orphan. Gabriel was paralyzed trying to choose between saving my son and protecting his own unborn child. I sent you that picture because I knew who you were, Hannah. You manage the foundation's audited books. You have root admin access to the offshore server logs. You're the only person who can unlock the forensic proof before Raymond wipes the master drive on Thanksgiving night.""
Hannah leaned back. The suspicion that had been gnawing at her soul for days withered away, replaced by an ice-cold, crystalline fury. Uncle Raymond hadn't just embezzled millions; he had weaponized Gabriel’s devotion, murdered an innocent father, and threatened a defenseless child.
""Thanksgiving,"" Hannah murmured, a slow, dangerous calculation forming behind her dark eyes. ""The family gathers at Westchester. Raymond always steps into Gabriel’s home office around eight o’clock to run the foundation's annual charitable tax filings.""

""He's planning to execute the final offshore sweep then,"" Mallory warned. ""He told me he would bring the transfer papers disguised as foundation grants for Gabriel to sign between dessert and drinks.""
Hannah took a slow, deliberate sip of her warm water, her gaze hardening into steel. ""Then we give Uncle Raymond the show of a lifetime. He thinks I'm an insecure, suspicious wife ready to implode her marriage over a pretty mistress. Let's make sure he doesn't suspect the ground beneath his feet is already hollow.""
