Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pen

""This farce ends right now,"" Patricia Mercer snapped, rising from her chair with patrician fury, her pearls vibrating against her silk collar. ""Hannah, you will not drag this family’s name through the gutter over some cheap, hysterical melodrama. Gabriel, remove this woman from our house immediately!""

""No, Mother,"" Gabriel said, his voice strangely flat, devoid of its previous panic.

Raymond set his bourbon down on the mantelpiece, clapping his hands together in mock conciliation. ""Now, now, Patricia. Let’s not be too harsh on Hannah. The girl is under tremendous physical stress. Seven months along, hormonal fluctuations, working too hard... it’s understandable that her imagination would run wild."" Raymond stepped toward Gabriel, resting a heavy, paternal hand on his nephew’s shoulder. ""Why don't we give the ladies some space to settle their differences? Gabe, come with me to the study. Let's get these foundation filings signed and filed before midnight. Once business is settled, we can resolve this unfortunate domestic misunderstanding with dignity.""

Hannah watched Raymond’s fingers dig slightly into Gabriel’s trapezius. The gesture looked loving, but she saw the underlying threat—the subtle physical dominance of a blackmailer reminding his victim who owned him.

""You're right, Uncle Ray,"" Hannah said softly, turning her tearless, brilliant eyes toward him. ""Business always comes first in this house. Please, take my husband. Go sign the papers that make everything final.""

Raymond smiled, an indulgent, victorious grin that revealed too many teeth. ""Good girl, Hannah. We'll be back down before the pumpkin pie.""

As Raymond turned toward the grand staircase, Gabriel caught Hannah’s eye. For a split second, the facade dropped. Gabriel didn't look like a guilty husband caught in adultery; he looked like a soldier stepping into an artillery trench. He gave his wife a single, microscopic nod.

Hannah waited until the study door on the second floor clicked shut.

The instant the latch engaged, the atmosphere in the dining room shifted from operatic grief to military precision.

Hannah reached into the pocket of her emerald dress, pulled out a sleek encrypted smartphone, and tapped the screen twice. ""They're inside. Initiate digital trace.""

Patricia froze, staring at her daughter-in-law as if she had sprouted wings. ""Hannah? What on earth are you doing?""

""Aunt Patricia,"" Hannah said calmly, walking over to the dining room sideboard and lifting the centerpiece bowl of fresh figs to reveal a compact black audio receiver wired into the estate’s auxiliary speakers. ""For the past four years, you’ve wondered why your late husband's legacy fund lost twenty-two million dollars during the European restructuring. You blamed the market. You blamed Gabriel's youth."" Hannah hit a toggle switch. ""I suggest you listen to what your brother-in-law is currently doing in the study.""

Above them, through the hidden microphones planted in the study's wainscoting, Raymond’s voice crackled into the dining room with absolute, horrifying clarity.

""Open the terminal, Gabe. Don't look at me with those sanctimonious puppy-dog eyes. You're entering your root administrative password, and you're approving the three transfers to Hudson Residential Restoration.""

Gabriel’s recorded voice replied, cold and steady: ""Those invoices are fraudulent, Raymond. You used Owen Keane's former drivers to route shell cargo through Port Newark. You killed Owen when he refused to look the other way.""

A harsh bark of laughter burst through the speaker—Raymond’s laughter.

""Owen Keane was a mid-level clerk who forgot his place. He thought three ethics seminars made him a hero. You have a pregnant wife downstairs having a psychotic breakdown in front of your mother. You have an unborn daughter who will need a father outside of federal prison. You sign these cryptographic transfer vouchers, Gabe, or by seven o’clock tomorrow morning, the FBI receives a flash drive showing that you personally authorized every offshore wire since your father drew his last breath.""

Patricia sank slowly back into her chair, her face turning the color of chalk. Her fingers clutched at her throat, the pearls scattering as the string snapped under her grip.

Downstairs, Mallory stood straight, her timid demeanor vanishing completely. She unbuttoned her overcoat to reveal an external hard drive strapped to her waist.

""The signal is repeating,"" Mallory said, checking her phone. ""The encrypted tunnel is open. He’s transmitting the files right now.""

Hannah picked up her phone and dialed a three-digit extension. ""Agent Vance. He just confessed on a live federal wire to the extortion and the offshore transfers. Take the house.""
