Chapter 2 - The Architect of Shadows

The rain had transformed into a relentless downpour by the time Hannah stepped into the sleek midtown office of Diane Keller. Diane, whose forensic accounting firm had dismantled two Fortune 500 Ponzi schemes over the past decade, stood by a wall of floor-to-ceiling glass, holding a thick manila folder.
""You look like you haven't slept in forty-eight hours,"" Diane said without turning around.
""I haven't,"" Hannah replied, sinking into a plush leather armchair and letting her breath escape in a long, controlled sigh. ""And I don't plan on sleeping until Raymond Mercer is in handcuffs.""
Diane turned, pushing her horn-rimmed glasses up her nose, her sharp gaze softening with concern. ""You verified Mallory Keane's story?""
""Every word of it,"" Hannah said, opening her tablet and sliding it across the mahogany desk. ""Look at the digital signature logs on the Hudson Residential Restoration vouchers. The IP addresses originate from the Mercer corporate penthouse in White Plains. That’s Raymond’s private floor. But look at the proxy router mask.""
Diane pulled the tablet closer, tapping through the terminal script. Her eyes widened slightly. ""He used Gabriel’s corporate credentials. He routed the authorization tokens through Gabriel’s encrypted home network in Westchester.""
""He spent eighteen months setting my husband up as the ultimate fall guy,"" Hannah said, her voice dropping into a chilling monotone. ""If the Department of Justice raided the foundation tomorrow, every single fraudulent invoice, every wire transfer to the Cayman shells, and every subcontract tied to the fake restoration projects points squarely at Gabriel. Uncle Ray made sure Gabriel's digital fingerprint was on the murder weapon.""
Diane flipped open her manila folder, laying out three glossy bank statements stamped with international banking consortium seals. ""It’s worse than you think, Hannah. Owen Keane wasn't just tracking embezzled grants. He discovered that Raymond was laundering money for an illicit shipping syndicate out of Montreal. The foundation’s overseas medical missions were being used as cover to smuggle specialized aerospace telemetry parts across maritime borders.""
Hannah felt a cold shiver run down her spine. ""That isn't corporate fraud. That’s federal espionage and racketeering.""
""Which carries life sentences,"" Diane said grimly. ""And if Gabriel is signed as the primary trustee on the annual filings this Thursday, Raymond triggers a backdoor transfer that drains fifty million dollars from the foundation's liquidity reserve into an unrecoverable crypto escrow. Gabriel will be left holding an empty vault and a federal indictment while Raymond boards a private jet to a non-extradition sanctuary.""
Hannah placed both palms against the cool wood of the desk, pushing herself to her feet. The nausea that had plagued her throughout the morning vanished, replaced by an electric surge of maternal instinct and protective resolve.
""Who is the lead special agent on the regional financial crimes task force?"" Hannah demanded.
Diane paused, studying the younger woman’s unwavering posture. ""Marcus Vance. Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Southern District of New York. I worked with him on the Lehman fallout. Why?""
""Call him,"" Hannah commanded. ""Tell him that the primary trustee of the Mercer Foundation wants to make a full proffer of evidence. But tell him he has to play by my rules. I won't let him arrest Raymond at an office where his high-priced lawyers can shred the local servers before the feds secure the digital warrant. We catch him red-handed, in the act of transmitting the forged filings from the Mercer family estate.""

""Hannah, you are seven months pregnant with a high-risk pregnancy,"" Diane warned, stepping forward and placing a steady hand on Hannah’s shoulder. ""Your blood pressure is already dangerously elevated. If Raymond realizes he’s cornered in an isolated estate in Westchester, things could turn violent. You remember what happened to Owen.""
""Raymond Mercer thinks women are decorative chess pieces,"" Hannah replied, her lips curving into a razor-thin smile that held no warmth whatsoever. ""He thinks I am blinded by suburban vanity and jealousy. He expects me to scream at Gabriel, throw wine, and pack my bags in a tearful rage. I am going to give him the domestic circus he wants to see. And while his eyes are glued to my so-called humiliation, Agent Vance will close the cage around him.""
