Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The high-definition video burst to life across the giant screen, filling the living room with the crisp, unmistakable sound of Alana’s own voice.

""Drink this and go to sleep... Listen to me, you little leech. Your mother dumps you here because she doesn't want you around, and my son works eighty hours a week paying for your clothes... You don't get pizza. You eat whatever scraps I decide to give you...""

Parker stopped breathing. The color drained from his face at an alarming rate, turning him an ashen, ghost-like gray. He stared at the television screen as the video showed little Dustin curled into a ball on the filthy cot in the utility room, sobbing in the dark after Alana slammed and locked the door from the outside.

""What... what is this?"" Parker stammered, his voice barely a whisper, his eyes wide with horror. ""Mom... why was he sleeping in the storage closet? You told me you put him in the front guest suite with the queen bed...""

Alana’s hands began to shake uncontrollably, not from frailty, but from raw, cornered terror. ""Parker, that... that video is taken out of context! Someone edited that! You know how dangerous artificial intelligence is these days! Clarissa faked it to destroy our family!""

""Artificial intelligence?"" Clarissa laughed, a cold, humorless sound that reverberated through the tense room. ""Let's see what else the 'AI' created, shall we?""

Clarissa clicked on the next file.

The screen jumped to the afternoon footage. There was Ellie, clearly visible, puffing on her vape, laughing as Alana counted through the stack of crisp hundred-dollar bills from Dustin's emergency envelope.

""Six hundred dollars... I'm taking this to the salon tomorrow. Ellie, you can use two hundred for your car insurance...""

Then came the audio that shattered whatever remained of Parker’s reality:

""Once I convince him that the boy is a behavioral menace, Parker will start pulling away from her... Once they divorce, Parker’s assets will be entirely under my control again. Clarissa won't get a single penny... And the boy? He can go back to whatever gutter he came from. He was an intruder the day Parker married her, and he’s an intruder now.""

The room plunged into an absolute, deafening silence. The only sound was the faint hum of the television screen as the video ended, looping back to the thumbnail of Dustin sitting alone on his cot.

Ellie sank back onto the sofa, burying her face in her hands, completely speechless. Her arrogant smirk was entirely gone, replaced by the sheer panic of someone caught red-handed in a felony.

Alana looked like a wild animal trapped in a corner. Her frail, trembling grandmother persona vanished entirely, revealing the bitter, venomous woman underneath. ""So what?!"" Alana suddenly screamed, glaring at Parker with wild, venomous eyes. ""So what if I took the money?! You owe me everything, Parker! I gave up my youth to raise you! And then you brought this low-class woman into our lives, forcing me to pretend that another man’s bastard is my grandchild! He is not my blood! He has never been my blood! You should be grateful I didn't leave him outside in the barn!""

Smack!

The sound of Parker’s palm slamming against the heavy dining table was like a gunshot. The wood rattled, sending a decorative vase wobbling dangerously.

Parker was shaking, but not with confusion anymore. His entire body trembled with pure, unadulterated fury. He turned toward his mother, his face contorted in an expression of disgust so profound that Alana visibly shrank back into the cushions.

""Get out,"" Parker said, his voice dropping into a guttural, terrifying growl.

""Parker, darling, listen to me—"" Alana gasped, reaching out toward his arm.

""DO NOT TOUCH ME!"" Parker roared, his voice shaking the walls of the house. ""Get out of my house! Both of you! Right now, before I call the sheriff and have you arrested for child abuse, unlawful confinement, and grand theft!""

Ellie grabbed her mother’s arm, scrambling to her feet in sheer panic. ""Mom, let's go. Let's just go, please!""

Alana struggled up from the sofa, her face twisted in rage and humiliation. ""You will regret this, Parker! You are throwing away your own mother for that whore and her stray dog! You will die alone!""

May you like

""GET OUT!"" Parker screamed again, pointing violently toward the front door.

They fled. The heavy oak front door slammed shut behind them, leaving Parker and Clarissa standing alone in the massive, echoing living room.
