Chapter 10 - A Table Full of Love

One year later, the golden warmth of early summer returned to the countryside, but everything about Clarissa and Dustin’s world was completely reborn.
The divorce had been finalized smoothly and amicably months ago. There were no bitter courtroom battles over furniture or savings. Parker had willingly surrendered the house to Clarissa, ensuring that Dustin would never have to lose the only stable home he had ever known. Parker had bought a small townhouse ten minutes away, remaining an active, dependable, and loving co-parent. He was there for every baseball game, every school play, and every parent-teacher conference, always respectful of Clarissa's boundaries and fiercely protective of Dustin.
Clarissa had flourished. With the crushing weight of her toxic in-laws permanently lifted from her life, her energy and radiance had returned. She had earned a promotion at the regional hospital, moving into an administrative nursing role that gave her normal daytime hours and every weekend off.
On this particular bright Saturday afternoon, Clarissa’s backyard was alive with laughter, chatter, and the mouthwatering aroma of a summer barbecue.
The wooden picnic table on the patio was overflowing with abundance. There were heaping platters of sweet barbecue ribs, grilled sweet corn dripping with melted butter, homemade potato salad, bowls of fresh watermelon slices, and warm garlic bread. In the center of the table sat a towering, double-chocolate fudge cake that Dustin and Clarissa had baked together that morning, completely covered in colorful sprinkles and candy dinosaurs.
Dustin was running across the lush green lawn, laughing hysterically as he chased Sarah’s golden retriever with a brand-new water blaster. He had grown nearly three inches over the past year. His cheeks were round and sun-kissed, his eyes sparkling with pure, unburdened childhood joy. There was no trace left of the frightened, starving little boy who had once hidden a cold potato behind his back in shame.
""Dustin! Chow time, kiddo!"" Parker called out with a wide smile, wearing a silly 'Master of the Grill' apron as he transferred the final batch of grilled burgers onto a platter.
""Coming!"" Dustin shouted happily. He tossed his water blaster onto the grass, sprinted across the lawn, and threw his arms around Parker’s waist, hugging him tightly before sliding onto the wooden bench at the head of the table.
Clarissa sat down right beside her son, placing a massive, loaded plate in front of him—two juicy ribs, a buttered corn on the cob, a giant scoop of macaroni, and a warm roll.
Dustin looked down at his plate, then looked up at Clarissa, his eyes shining with adoration. ""Mommy, this looks like a royal feast!""
Clarissa reached over, cupping his warm cheek in her hand, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep and profound it brought happy tears to the corners of her eyes.
May you like
""It is a royal feast, my sweet boy,"" Clarissa whispered softly, kissing the top of his head. ""Because in this family, at this table, you will always have the best seat in the house.""
As they all joined hands around the sunny table—friends, family, and people who truly loved and cherished one another—Clarissa looked up into the clear blue summer sky. She had walked through the darkest valley of betrayal and cruelty, and she had emerged victorious on the other side. Her son was safe, her soul was peaceful, and at long last, their table was finally full of unconditional love."
