Chapter 1 - The Feast of Cruelty

The silence that stretched across the dining room was heavy and suffocating. Clarissa remained knelt before Dustin, feeling the faint, rhythmic shuddering of his small frame under her hands. He wasn’t crying loudly; he was holding it all inside, the way children do when they’ve learned that showing vulnerability only invites deeper cruelty. That realization cut Clarissa deeper than any sharp insult could. Her bright, bubbly seven-year-old boy, who loved dinosaur facts and morning pancakes, had been reduced to a cowering shadow in less than two weeks.

Behind her, Alana let out a sharp, dismissive sigh, the kind of theatrical noise she reserved for whenever she felt someone was exaggerating. ""Oh, please, Clarissa! Stop being so dramatic. The boy is twisting my words, as typical children do when they get disciplined. You baby him far too much, and look where it got him. He has zero manners and expects the world to revolve around his every little whim.""

Ellie, Clarissa’s sister-in-law, picked up her glass of sweet tea and took a slow, calculated sip. Her lips curled into an arrogant little smirk. ""Seriously, Clarissa. Mom is doing you a favor by teaching him boundaries. You can’t raise a boy to be soft, especially when he’s already coming into a family that has high standards. He needs structure. He broke the antique planter out front, and then he dared to complain when Mason got a drumstick first.""

""I didn't break it,"" Dustin whispered, his voice cracking as tears finally spilled over his lashes. ""Mason pushed me into the dirt when we were chasing the truck. The truck Mom bought me.""

Clarissa slowly stood up. Every single muscle in her body was coiled tight with rage, but her mind was icy, terrifyingly clear. She looked down at the table. The golden, crispy fried chicken smelled savory and rich. The macaroni and cheese was baked with a bubbly cheddar crust—recipes made using the exact ingredients Clarissa had purchased with her own hard-earned overtime paycheck. And right next to Mason’s plate was the imported hazelnut chocolate bar she had tucked into Dustin’s backpack as a special surprise. Mason was tearing into it with greasy, careless fingers, not even bothering to look up from his tablet screen.

""You took the food I bought,"" Clarissa said, her voice dangerously quiet, lacking the explosive anger Alana was clearly bracing for. ""You used my money to stock these pantries. You took the toys I bought my son and handed them to your favorite grandchild. And then you put my seven-year-old in a corner with a solitary, unseasoned cold potato and told him he wasn't real family?""

Alana’s face flushed a blotchy, furious red. She stepped forward, wagging a manicured finger. ""Lower your tone in my home, Clarissa! How dare you question how I manage my household? Parker’s father built this family on discipline and bloodline pride! You are Parker’s wife, yes, but Dustin is from your previous mistake. My son has been extraordinarily generous to take you both in, to give that boy a respectable roof and a clean surname. But blood is blood, Clarissa! You cannot force my heart to see a stranger's offspring the same way I see Mason, my daughter’s legitimate flesh and blood! He needs to know his place so he doesn’t grow up expecting an inheritance he didn't earn!""

""Mom, don't waste your breath,"" Ellie chimed in with a laugh, tossing her napkin onto her plate. ""She’s just looking for an excuse to play the victim. If she doesn't like how we run things, she can pack his little bags and drive back to the city. We were doing her a charity anyway.""

Clarissa looked at Alana, then shifted her gaze to Ellie, and finally down at Dustin. Dustin was watching her with huge, frightened eyes, terrified that his mother would agree with them, terrified that he truly was a burden. Clarissa walked back over to him, reached down, and lifted him effortlessly into her arms, wrapping his legs securely around her waist. She ignored the way Alana huffed and crossed her arms.

""We are leaving right now,"" Clarissa said softly into Dustin’s hair.

""Oh, go ahead, run away!"" Alana shouted after her as Clarissa grabbed Dustin’s jacket and headed toward the back hallway. ""Run straight to Parker and cry your pathetic crocodile tears! See whose side he takes! He knows who raised him, and he knows how much I sacrificed for his career! He will put you right back in your lane, little girl!""

Clarissa didn't look back. She walked down the long corridor toward the guest room where Dustin had been sleeping. She needed his backpack, his medication, and his shoes. But more than anything, there was one specific thing she needed to retrieve before walking out of that house forever. Two weeks ago, knowing Alana’s subtle passive-aggressive tendencies, Clarissa had done something she hadn't even told Parker about. Inside the plush, oversized teddy bear that sat on the corner shelf of Dustin’s bedroom was a continuous-recording 4K smart nanny camera, hooked directly to an encrypted cloud drive.

Clarissa pushed the bedroom door open, and when she saw the unmade, filthy cot tucked in the corner next to old storage boxes, her jaw locked. The real nightmare hadn’t even begun to reveal itself yet.
