Chapter 5 - The Web of Deceit

The moment Clarissa stepped across the threshold, the living room went dead silent. Parker was pacing behind the sofa, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled from running his hands through it. On the large sectional sofa sat Alana, draped dramatically in a cashmere throw blanket, clutching a warm cup of herbal tea with both hands. Ellie was seated beside her, rubbing her mother’s back with exaggerated tenderness while glaring daggers at Clarissa.

""There she is,"" Ellie said, her voice dripping with disgust. ""The woman who almost gave our mother a heart attack.""

Parker stopped pacing and turned toward Clarissa, his eyes dark with anger. ""Clarissa, look at her! She’s shaking! What on earth were you thinking, causing a scene like that in front of the kids? Do you have any idea how much stress Mom has been under trying to help us out?""

Alana let out a pathetic, trembling sob, burying her face in a tissue. ""I only tried to help, Parker... I poured my heart into giving that little boy a lovely summer... and Clarissa stormed in, calling me names, accusing me of abusing him, threatening to call the police... She said I was a monster!""

""Did you call her a monster, Clarissa?"" Parker demanded, stepping toward his wife, his jaw clenched. ""Did you throw a tantrum because Mom gave him a timeout for misbehaving? Tell me the truth!""

Clarissa stood perfectly still near the entryway. She didn't flinch. She didn't raise her voice. She simply looked at Parker, seeing the man she had loved for half a decade through completely unclouded eyes. He hadn't asked if Dustin was okay. He hadn't asked what Dustin had eaten. He hadn't even noticed that their son wasn't in the room. He had immediately, instinctively accepted his mother’s narrative without a shred of doubt.

""Where is Dustin, anyway?"" Parker asked, finally realizing the boy wasn't behind her. ""Did you leave him in the car?""

""He’s next door at Sarah’s,"" Clarissa answered evenly. ""Because unlike you, I actually care about protecting his mental well-being from toxic predators.""

""How dare you!"" Ellie shrieked, jumping to her feet. ""You hear that, Parker? She’s calling us predators now! After Mom spent two whole weeks cooking for him, washing his filthy clothes, and buying him toys out of her own pocket!""

""Out of her own pocket?"" Clarissa challenged, raising an eyebrow. ""Is that why Alana took the six hundred dollars in emergency cash from Dustin’s backpack and split it with you so you could pay your overdue car insurance?""

Ellie’s face turned instantly white. She froze mid-gesture, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.

Alana’s fake crying halted abruptly. Her eyes flashed with panic before quickly morphing back into defensive outrage. ""That is an outrageous lie! I never touched your money! How dare you accuse me of theft! Parker, are you going to let her stand there and slander your mother and your sister like this?!""

Parker looked torn, blinking in confusion between Clarissa and his mother. ""Clarissa, that’s a very serious accusation. Mom wouldn't steal six hundred dollars. She doesn't need your money. You’re being completely unreasonable right now.""

""Am I?"" Clarissa asked, a chilling smile touching her lips. ""Parker, do you know what your mother fed Dustin for lunch today while you were working your fingers to the bone paying for this lifestyle?""

""She made fried chicken and sides,"" Parker said, repeating the story he had been told. ""She said Dustin threw his plate on the floor in a fit of rage because he wanted fast food instead, so she made him wait until dinner.""

""Is that the story she sold you?"" Clarissa walked over to the coffee table, set her laptop down, and plugged in the USB flash drive. ""Your mother took all the groceries I bought with my overtime pay, cooked a massive feast for herself, Ellie, and Mason, and forced our seven-year-old son to sit in a corner on a dirty armchair with a single, unpeeled, ice-cold boiled potato. No salt. No butter. No water. Because she told him he wasn't real family and didn't deserve to sit at their table.""

""Lies! Pure fabrications from a jealous, insecure woman!"" Alana shrieked, her voice dropping the feeble, frail tone entirely and turning shrill and sharp. ""Parker, make her leave! Turn that computer off! I will not be humiliated in my own son's living room!""

""If you have nothing to hide, Alana, why are you screaming?"" Clarissa asked calmly, turning the laptop screen to face the room. She pressed the play button, and the massive 65-inch smart television mounted on the wall instantly mirrored the display.
