Chapter 3 - The Secret Footage

The footage was shockingly clear, both the visual feed and the high-fidelity audio capturing every nuance of the utility room. Clarissa sat in the corner booth of the diner, her hands trembling as she adjusted the volume on her earphones. Across from her, Dustin was happily dipping his French fries into a puddle of ketchup, humming softly under his breath, completely oblivious to the horrific truth his mother was currently uncovering.

The first clip was dated three nights ago, around eight in the evening. Dustin was sitting on the edge of his cot, wearing his pajamas, clutching a coloring book. The heavy wooden door creaked open, and Alana entered, carrying a small paper cup of tap water. She didn't look like a grandmother; her face was twisted into a scowl of pure, undisguised contempt.

""Drink this and go to sleep,"" Alana’s recorded voice was sharp and biting.

""Grandma, I'm really hungry,"" Dustin's tiny voice pleaded through the earphones. ""Mason got ice cream and pizza. Can I just have a piece of bread?""

Alana snatched the coloring book right out of Dustin’s small hands and tossed it onto the dirty floor. ""Listen to me, you little leech. Your mother dumps you here because she doesn't want you around, and my son works eighty hours a week paying for your clothes and your school supplies. You don't get pizza. You don't get snacks. You eat whatever scraps I decide to give you, and if you dare complain to your mother, I will make sure Parker throws both of you out onto the street. Do you want to be homeless, Dustin? Do you want your mother sleeping under a bridge because of you?""

Dustin had shrunk back against the wall, pulling his knees to his chest, shaking violently as tears streamed down his pale cheeks. ""No, Grandma... please...""

""Then shut your mouth, close your eyes, and don't make a sound until morning,"" Alana snapped, before turning off the light and slamming the door shut, locking it from the outside with a distinct metallic click.

Clarissa felt a sickening wave of nausea rise in her throat. She gripped the edge of the laminate table so hard her knuckles turned stark white. Her breath hitched, hot tears of rage threatening to blur her vision. But she forced herself to keep watching. She clicked on another file, recorded yesterday afternoon.

This time, both Alana and Ellie were in the room. Ellie was sitting on an upturned wooden crate, smoking an e-cigarette, blowing vapor toward the ceiling while scrolling on her phone. Alana was rummaging through Dustin’s backpack, pulling out the emergency cash envelope Clarissa had left.

""Look at this,"" Alana said with an ugly laugh, waving the thick stack of bills. ""Six hundred dollars. Clarissa thinks she’s so clever, leaving emergency funds. I'm taking this to the salon tomorrow. Ellie, you can use two hundred for your car insurance.""

""Good,"" Ellie replied carelessly. ""Parker makes enough money at his accounting firm anyway. It's ridiculous that he wastes it on that woman and her baggage. Mom, when are you going to convince Parker to rewrite his life insurance policy? If something happens to him, everything goes to Clarissa. That’s hundreds of thousands of dollars that belong to our family, not her.""

Alana scoffed, tucking the bills into her designer purse. ""Don't worry, Ellie. I’ve already planted the seed in Parker’s head. I told him Clarissa has been distant, secretive, and unappreciative. Once I convince him that the boy is a behavioral menace, Parker will start pulling away from her. Men are simple creatures. You make them feel like their wife is tearing their family apart, and they will run right back to their mother. Once they divorce, Parker’s assets will be entirely under my control again. Clarissa won't get a single penny. I’ll make sure she leaves with nothing more than the clothes on her back.""

""And the boy?"" Ellie asked with a malicious chuckle.

""He can go back to whatever gutter he came from,"" Alana said coldly. ""He was an intruder the day Parker married her, and he’s an intruder now.""

Clarissa closed her laptop screen with a quiet, deliberate click. The air in the diner felt suddenly thin. She sat frozen, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. This was never about bad manners. It was never about a broken flowerpot or discipline. It was a calculated, sadistic campaign designed to emotionally abuse her son, steal their money, poison Parker’s mind, and dismantle her marriage from the inside out for financial greed.

Just then, Clarissa’s smartphone vibrated violently against the table. The screen illuminated with Parker’s picture. The caller ID flashed: Husband.

Clarissa took a deep, steadying breath, composed her voice into absolute neutrality, and swiped the green button.
