Chapter 2 - The Truth in the Shadows

Dustin clung tightly to Clarissa’s neck as they entered the dim, stuffy room. It wasn't the sunny guest bedroom Alana had promised over the phone. Instead, Dustin had been relegated to the drafty back utility room, an old storage space that smelled faintly of mildew, motor oil, and damp cardboard. His small cot was made with a scratchy, threadbare wool blanket that smelled like dust. His clothes were still crammed inside his suitcase, half of them dumped carelessly onto the concrete floor.
""Is this where you've been sleeping, Dustin?"" Clarissa asked, keeping her tone gentle despite the roaring fire burning behind her ribs.
Dustin nodded against her collarbone. ""Grandma said the guest room was too nice for a boy who tracks in dirt. She said Mason needed the big king bed so he could watch cartoons in the morning.""
Clarissa kissed his forehead. ""You don't have to spend another second in this room, baby. Put your sneakers on for Mommy, okay?""
While Dustin bent down to slip his feet into his worn sneakers, Clarissa moved toward the high wooden shelf against the far wall. There, sitting among dusty jars and old family photo albums, was the brown plush teddy bear with a red ribbon. To anyone else, it looked like an ordinary stuffed animal, slightly tilted toward the room. Clarissa reached up, took the bear down, and felt the small, discreet opening along the back seam. The camera unit was cool to the touch, its tiny green light blinking softly, signaling that it had been continuously transmitting and saving data to her secure cloud server via the house’s Wi-Fi network.
She tucked the bear firmly under her arm. Clarissa quickly tossed Dustin’s clothes back into his duffel bag, zipped it shut, and grabbed his favorite dinosaur jacket from the back of the door. She didn't bother packing the brand-new toys she had bought; she knew Alana and Ellie would throw a tantrum over them, and right now, she had zero desire to engage in petty squabbles over plastic when she had much bigger weapons in her hands.
When they walked back through the hallway, Alana was standing by the front entryway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, a smug expression plastered across her wrinkled face. Ellie stood right beside her, arms folded in identical fashion, watching Clarissa with mocking amusement.
""Taking your little drama queen home already?"" Alana sneered, blocking half the doorway. ""Don't expect Parker to pay for your gas, Clarissa. And don't think you can come crawling back here when you realize you can't juggle your nursing shifts and full-time parenting on your own. You should have shown some gratitude for the free babysitting.""
Clarissa didn't say a single word. She kept one arm securely around Dustin, who was hiding his face against her side, and held the duffel bag in her other hand. She walked straight toward Alana without slowing her pace. For a second, Alana looked startled by the sheer, unblinking intensity in Clarissa’s eyes and stepped backward, almost tripping over the entryway rug.
Clarissa pushed open the screen door, stepped out into the crisp afternoon air, and walked straight toward her sedan parked in the gravel driveway. Behind her, Ellie yelled out, ""Good riddance! Make sure you tell Parker how ungrateful you were to his mother! We'll be calling him first anyway!""
Clarissa secured Dustin into his booster seat in the back, leaning in to buckle his seatbelt with steady hands. ""Are you hungry, sweetie?"" she asked softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead.
""A little bit,"" Dustin admitted quietly, his stomach letting out an audible rumble. ""Can we get cheeseburgers? The ones with the curly fries?""
""We are going to get the biggest cheeseburger meal on the menu, extra fries, and a giant chocolate milkshake,"" Clarissa promised, offering him a warm, reassuring smile. ""Whatever you want, it's yours today.""
She closed the car door, threw his duffel bag into the trunk, and climbed into the driver’s seat. As she started the engine and reversed down the long gravel driveway, she looked into the rearview mirror. Alana and Ellie were standing on the front porch, already holding their phones up to their ears, their mouths moving animatedly. Clarissa knew exactly who they were calling. They were dialing Parker, orchestrating their web of lies, playing the role of the saintly, exhausted grandmother and aunt who had been terribly mistreated by an ungrateful daughter-in-law.

Clarissa pulled onto the main county road and drove until she reached a quiet diner off the highway. She bought Dustin his promised cheeseburger, curly fries, and chocolate milkshake, watching with an aching heart as the little boy devoured the warm food as if he hadn't seen a proper meal in days. While Dustin ate happily, his spirits slowly lifting, Clarissa took out her laptop, tethered it to her phone’s mobile hotspot, and opened her private cloud drive.
There were over two hundred hours of footage logged from the camera. Clarissa slipped her earphones in, selected the file from two days prior, and clicked play. What she saw and heard through the screen made the blood freeze in her veins.
