Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at Home

""Clarissa, what on earth is wrong with you?!"" Parker’s voice exploded through the phone speaker the second she answered, thick with frustration and accusations. ""I’m in the middle of a major client audit, and my mother calls me sobbing hysterically! She said you barged into her house, screamed insults at her, accused her of starving Dustin, and stormed out like an unhinged maniac! Have you lost your mind?!""
Clarissa kept her eyes fixed on Dustin, who was happily chewing on a french fry, unaware of the venom pouring out of the phone. ""I am not discussing this over the phone while I’m driving, Parker. Where are you right now?""
""Where do you think I am? I rushed home because Mom said she was having chest pains from how violently you attacked her!"" Parker shouted, his anger palpable. ""Ellie is driving her to our house right now so she can rest! You need to get home immediately and apologize to my mother. I cannot believe you would disrespect her like this after everything she did to take care of our boy!""
""Our boy?"" Clarissa repeated, the irony burning her tongue like acid. ""Is that what you call him, Parker? Because your mother made it abundantly clear today that Dustin is an outsider who doesn't belong at her table.""
""Don't twist her words, Clarissa! Mom is from an older generation, she has old-fashioned discipline methods! Dustin probably threw a tantrum and you overreacted like you always do!"" Parker exhaled sharply, clearly stressed. ""Just get home. Now.""
He hung up abruptly, leaving a harsh dial tone buzzing in Clarissa's ear. She lowered the phone, her hands perfectly still now. The shock had passed; only cold, clinical determination remained. She had spent five years walking on eggshells around Parker’s mother, swallowing passive-aggressive remarks about her humble background, tolerating Ellie’s constant snide comments, and doing everything she could to be the supportive, peacemaking wife. She had believed that love and patience could eventually bridge the gap.
She had been a fool.
""Mommy? Are we going to see Daddy?"" Dustin asked, looking up with big, curious brown eyes.
""Yes, baby,"" Clarissa said gently, reaching over to wipe a smear of ketchup from his cheek. ""We’re going home to see Daddy. But listen to me carefully: whatever happens today, I want you to know that you did nothing wrong. You are smart, you are kind, and you are my whole world. Nobody will ever hurt you or lock you away ever again. Do you understand me?""
Dustin smiled softly and nodded, putting his small hand into hers. ""I know, Mommy. Because you came and got me.""
Those words settled deep into Clarissa’s soul like an unbreakable vow. She paid the diner bill, led Dustin out to the car, and began the forty-five-minute drive back to their suburban home. During the drive, she made two phone calls. The first was to her best friend and neighbor, Sarah, asking if Dustin could spend the afternoon playing with Sarah's son in their backyard. The second was to a prominent family law attorney whose number she had saved months ago when Alana first started meddling in their joint bank accounts.
By the time Clarissa pulled into her driveway, Alana’s luxury crossover SUV and Ellie’s sedan were already parked out front, completely blocking the garage.
Clarissa pulled up to the curb, turned off the ignition, and walked Dustin directly over to Sarah’s house next door. Sarah met them at the porch with a knowing, sympathetic look. ""He’s safe with me, Clary. Take as long as you need,"" Sarah whispered.

""Thank you,"" Clarissa said quietly.
She turned around and walked back across the manicured lawn toward her own front door. She could hear the muffled sounds of voices inside—Alana’s tearful wailing, Ellie’s dramatic affirmations, and Parker’s stressed pacing. Clarissa reached into her purse, felt the smooth metal casing of the USB drive containing the exported cloud footage, gripped her key, and unlocked the door.
