Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Aspen Setup

Margaret’s immaculate facade shattered in an instant. For the first time in Daniel’s life, he saw genuine, naked panic flash across his mother’s face. She looked at Olivia, then at the glowing smartphone screen in Olivia’s hand, her lips parting in disbelief.

“You didn't,” Margaret hissed, her voice losing its polished veneer.

“I did,” Olivia replied calmly, walking down the sweeping staircase step by step, never taking her eyes off Margaret. “Three million viewers just heard Rachel Bennett confess to being coerced into an illegal medical procedure orchestrated by you. They heard you threaten to destroy a family business, forge executive digital signatures, and traffick a pregnant woman across international borders. The comment section is moving so fast the app is freezing, Margaret. Bloomberg just picked up the feed.”

Margaret turned sharply to the two corporate lawyers standing behind her. “Shut it down! Contact the platform’s executives! File an emergency injunction for defamation, trade secret violations—anything!”

“It’s too late for that, Mrs. Mercer,” one of the attorneys murmured, staring down at his vibrating tablet. “The Mercer Group’s European ADRs are already tumbling eight percent in Frankfurt trading. We are getting flooded with inquiries from major institutional shareholders. If the federal authorities intervene, the Department of Justice will initiate a securities fraud probe before sunrise.”

Daniel walked down the stairs, standing beside Olivia. He looked at his mother not with anger, but with absolute disgust. “You thought Aspen gave you leverage over me. You thought you could use shame to keep me under your thumb for the rest of my life. But you forgot one thing: I never cared about the Mercer legacy as much as you did. I built my half of the company from the ground up.”

Upstairs, Rachel stepped out onto the landing, wrapped in an oversized wool blanket, her face pale but determined. Supported by Vance, she looked down at Margaret. “I have the emails, Margaret. Every single encrypted message you sent to my private inbox detailing the offshore bank accounts, the payment schedule, and the threats against my father. Dr. Harrison recorded the consultation sessions because he didn't trust you. It’s all archived on an external drive hidden in my apartment.”

Margaret clenched her gloved hands into tight fists, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper. “You ungrateful little parasites. I made this family. I protected this fortune from your weak-willed father, Daniel! If I had left the company to him, we would have been bankrupt twenty years ago! Everything I did was to ensure that the Mercer empire would endure for another century!”

“At the cost of your son’s soul? At the cost of two innocent unborn babies?” Olivia asked, her voice trembling with indignation. “You aren't a matriarch, Margaret. You’re a sociopath with a trust fund.”

Just then, the sound of sirens echoed in the distance, cutting through the snowy silence of Westchester County. Flashing red and blue lights flickered through the frosted glass windows of the grand foyer.

Arthur Pendelton had delivered on his word. Two marked state trooper vehicles and an unmarked federal sedan pulled up behind Daniel’s SUV in the driveway.

Margaret’s attorneys immediately stepped away from her, tucking their tablets into their leather cases and raising their hands in a gesture of neutrality. “Margaret, we cannot represent you in a criminal proceeding involving federal fraud and coercion. Our retainer is strictly corporate. We advise you to remain silent.”

The heavy front door swung open, and federal agents accompanied by state troopers entered the foyer, led by an assistant United States attorney holding an emergency warrant.

“Margaret Mercer?” the lead agent stated, stepping onto the marble floor. “We have an emergency federal warrant for the seizure of all electronic records, servers, and communication devices related to Mercer Family Reproductive Services and Dr. Robert Harrison. Furthermore, we are taking you into custody for questioning regarding allegations of unlawful coercion, biological fraud, and violation of federal medical privacy statutes.”

Margaret looked at the handcuffs in the agent’s hands. Her aristocratic spine stiffened. She looked at Daniel, waiting for him to step in, waiting for her only son to shield the family name from public disgrace as he had done so many times in the past.

Daniel looked back at her, his expression cold and unmoving. He reached down, took Olivia’s hand, and intertwined his fingers with hers.

“You’re on your own, Mother,” Daniel said softly. “The Mercer family ends where your greed began.”

As the agents led Margaret out into the biting winter air, the sirens cast dancing shadows across the high ceilings of the Bedford estate. Inside, three lives lay completely derailed, but the cloud of lies that had suffocated them for seven long months was finally beginning to clear.
