Chapter 27 - Calvin’s Last Secret

Calvin lasted nine minutes.

Ward placed both handwritten threats on the table.

“You said you sent the first.”

Calvin stared at them.

“I did.”

“No.”

Vance slid forward a forensic report.

“Different printer stock from the stationery recovered at your apartment. Different ink from every pen in your office. Surveillance also places you in Washington when the package was delivered.”

Calvin’s shoulders sagged.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Who are you protecting?”

Calvin remained silent.

Daniel’s anger sharpened.

“Someone photographed my newborn daughters.”

Nothing.

“They threatened Evelyn’s child.”

Calvin closed his eyes.

Then Ward said one name.

“Thomas Vale.”

Calvin looked up.

That was enough.

Vance immediately left the room.

Daniel stared at Calvin.

“Who is Thomas Vale?”

Calvin spoke quietly.

“Margaret’s private security director.”

“I never met him.”

“You weren’t supposed to.”

Vale had operated outside normal Mercer security.

He managed tasks that could never connect directly to the family.

Surveillance.

Intimidation.

Transportation.

Disappearing records.

The guards at Bedford had reported through subcontractors ultimately connected to Vale.

“Where is he?” Ward asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Why protect him?”

Calvin laughed bitterly.

“I wasn’t protecting him.”

“What then?”

“My family.”

Vale had contacted Calvin after Margaret’s arrest.

He possessed files documenting crimes committed by dozens of people in Margaret’s network.

He threatened to destroy Calvin’s brother, Evelyn’s daughter, Rachel’s father, and anyone else who cooperated.

“Why?” Daniel asked.

Calvin looked at him.

“Because Vale controls the Phoenix infrastructure.”

“The money?”

“What remains of it.”

Ward frowned.

“We froze the accounts.”

“Most of them.”

Calvin explained that Vale had designed an emergency reserve outside the main Phoenix Fund.

Twenty million dollars in cryptocurrency and bearer assets.

Enough to disappear permanently.

But Vale needed one thing first.

The original black ledger.

“He thinks it contains account keys,” Calvin said.

“It doesn’t,” Daniel replied.

“He doesn’t know that.”

Ward stood.

“So every threat has been about forcing someone to give him the ledger.”

Calvin nodded.

“Why threaten the trial?”

“Chaos. If Margaret is acquitted or the proceedings collapse, investigators focus on her longer. Vale gets time to escape.”

Daniel leaned back.

The final enemy was not a secret heir.

Not a corporate rival.

Not even Margaret.

It was the man paid for years to clean up everyone else’s mess.

Vance returned.

“We found Vale.”

“Where?”

“He rented a storage unit in Yonkers under an alias.”

Agents raided it.

Vale wasn’t there.

But the unit contained surveillance equipment, forged identification, cash, and photographs of everyone connected to the trial.

Including the babies.

Daniel had to leave the room when he saw those.

Olivia followed.

In the hallway he pressed both hands against the wall.

“I brought this into our home.”

“No.”

“My family.”

“Daniel.”

“My mother.”

Olivia grabbed his face gently.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“You are not responsible for every person Margaret corrupted.”

“But I should’ve seen—”

“You were surviving her too.”

His eyes closed.

Olivia continued.

“What matters is what you do now.”

Daniel breathed slowly.

The courthouse entered lockdown after investigators discovered Vale had rented a parking garage space three blocks away.

His vehicle remained there.

Inside was a rifle case.

Empty.

Ward stopped court proceedings.

The judge ordered jurors secured.

Police shut down surrounding streets.

Snipers appeared on rooftops.

For two hours, nobody knew where Vale was.

Then Michael Trent called Vance.

“I know where he’ll go.”

“How?”

“Margaret once told me that if everything failed, there was one place nobody would think to search.”

“Where?”

Michael gave him an address.

The old Mercer estate in Bedford.

The same house where Rachel had nearly been forced onto a plane.

Federal tactical teams surrounded it after dark.

Daniel remained in Manhattan.

At 11:08 p.m., Vance called.

“We got him.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Anyone hurt?”

“No.”

Then Vance added something unexpected.

“He had the rifle.”

Daniel looked at Olivia.

“But he wasn’t aiming at us.”

“Who?”

“Margaret.”

Vale had planned to shoot Margaret during prisoner transport the next morning.

Daniel understood immediately.

Dead women could not testify against security directors.

Vale’s final contingency was to silence the only person who knew every secret.

The next morning, Margaret entered court under extraordinary protection.

She looked toward Daniel.

For the first time, she seemed shaken.

May you like

She had spent her life treating people like disposable tools.

One of those tools had finally decided she was disposable too.
