Chapter 4 - The Rogue Clinic

The iron gates of the Mercer estate in Bedford stood wide open, guarded by a black commercial van with tinted windows. The headlights of Daniel’s SUV cut through the swirling snow, illuminating two men in tactical coats standing near the rear doors of the van. The moment Daniel accelerated up the winding, tree-lined driveway, the men stepped forward, hands raised in an aggressive warning.
Daniel didn't slow down until he was bumper-to-bumper with the van, the SUV’s heavy tires screeching against the frozen gravel. He slammed the vehicle into park, turned to Olivia, and locked the passenger doors from the console.
“Stay inside,” he commanded. “The doors are bulletproof. Don't unlock them for anyone except me or Vance.”
Daniel leaped out of the SUV into the bitter cold. The two security guards immediately moved to flank him, their faces impassive. “Mr. Mercer, you need to turn around. Mrs. Margaret Mercer has given strict instructions that no one enters the main house until the departure is complete.”
“Get out of my way before I have you arrested for criminal obstruction,” Daniel snarled, stepping directly into the space of the taller guard.
Suddenly, the roar of another engine echoed down the driveway. A dark sedan screeched to a halt behind Daniel’s SUV, and Marcus Vance stepped out, accompanied by two former military contractors he kept on retainer. Vance flashed a set of credentials and an official judicial injunction that Daniel’s emergency attorneys had managed to expedite.
“New York State Supreme Court emergency protection order,” Vance announced with flat authority. “Any interference with this property will result in immediate felony detention. Step aside, gentlemen.”
The guards glanced at each other, recognizing that the situation had escalated beyond private security protocol. They stepped back, hands raised, retreating toward their van. Daniel didn't wait. He bounded up the stone steps of the estate and hit the heavy mahogany door with his shoulder, bursting into the grand foyer.
Upstairs, the sound of splintering wood signaled that someone was trying to break through Rachel’s barricade. Daniel sprinted up the spiral staircase, Vance right on his heels. At the end of the western wing, a third guard was using a crowbar against the heavy oak bedroom door.
“Step away from the door!” Daniel roared, his voice shaking the crystal sconces on the wall.
The guard dropped the tool, seeing Vance’s men raise non-lethal deterrent weapons. Vance grabbed the man by the collar, forced him against the wall, and quickly disarmed him. Daniel kicked the remaining debris out of the doorframe and shoved the door inward.
Inside, the room was in ruins. A heavy mahogany dresser had been dragged across the floor to block the entrance. Rachel was curled behind an armchair in the far corner, sobbing uncontrollably, clutching an ultrasound image to her chest.
“Rachel,” Daniel said, his voice lowering as he approached with open hands. “It’s over. You’re safe. Nobody is taking you to Switzerland.”
Rachel looked up, her face pale and damp with sweat. When she saw Daniel, she collapsed forward, burying her face against his knees. “She made me do it, Daniel... She took my father’s notes! She said if I refused, she would release financial records that would send my dad to prison for thirty years! I went to the clinic in upstate New York... Dr. Harrison... he was paid half a million dollars to perform the procedure off the books!”
Daniel helped her up to the sofa, his eyes burning with controlled fury. “Dr. Harrison? Harrison from the Hudson Valley Reproductive Institute?”
Rachel nodded rapidly, gasping for breath. “Yes! Harrison has Margaret’s personal signature on the authorization documents. Margaret forged your digital signature on the consent forms using your executive trust key! Harrison kept the original physical paperwork locked in his private safe because he knew it was illegal and wanted insurance against Margaret!”
Daniel pulled out his phone and immediately dialed Arthur Pendelton at the SEC, while Vance secured the perimeter. “Pendelton. We have the doctor’s name. Dr. Robert Harrison, Hudson Valley Reproductive. Margaret used forged digital trust authorizations to bypass biological safety protocols. We need a federal warrant on Harrison’s clinic right now before Margaret cleans out the records.”
Downstairs, the front door clicked open.
Daniel stiffened, gesturing for Vance to hold his position. He walked to the mezzanine overlooking the foyer.
Standing in the entryway, dusting snowflakes off her pristine fur-trimmed coat, was Margaret. Behind her stood two senior corporate attorneys carrying thick black leather briefcases.
“You always were so terribly dramatic, Daniel,” Margaret called up, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “Did you really think a local emergency order would stop the mechanisms I spent three decades building? You can keep Rachel here tonight if you wish. But tomorrow morning, the Mercer Trust files an emergency petition for sole custody of both children.”
Olivia stepped out from the library near the grand staircase, her phone in hand, looking directly at Margaret.

“You won't be filing anything tomorrow, Margaret,” Olivia said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the hall. “Because while Daniel was breaking down doors, I was live-streaming this entire confrontation to three million followers on my gallery’s verified platform. The financial markets just woke up in London. And your board is already calling an emergency vote of no confidence.”
