Chapter 11 - The Message From Oregon

Three weeks after Arthur Pendelton delivered the final adoption decree, Olivia woke at 2:17 in the morning to the sound of Daniel’s phone vibrating across the nightstand.
Neither of them slept deeply anymore.
Two newborn daughters had transformed their penthouse into a world of bottles, whispered conversations, half-finished coffee, and stolen forty-minute naps. Daniel could negotiate a billion-dollar acquisition without blinking, yet one tiny cry from Amelia or Grace could send him stumbling through the hallway with his shirt buttoned wrong.
Tonight, however, neither baby was crying.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“What is it?” Olivia whispered.
His face changed.
The warmth vanished first. Then the exhaustion.
“Rachel.”
Olivia pushed herself upright.
Rachel had been in Oregon for almost a month. She had respected every boundary Olivia requested. She sent no dramatic apologies, made no attempts to force herself back into their lives, and communicated only through the attorney managing Grace’s open-adoption records.
Daniel opened the message.
There were only seven words.
SOMEONE USED MARGARET’S CREDENTIALS AGAIN LAST NIGHT.
Attached was a photograph.
Olivia leaned closer.
It showed a computer screen displaying an access log from the Mercer Family Reproductive Services archive. The system was supposed to have been frozen by federal investigators months earlier.
Yet someone had entered the database at 11:43 p.m.
The user identification belonged to Margaret.
“That’s impossible,” Olivia said. “She’s in federal custody.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Her account should have been permanently disabled.”
A second image arrived.
This one showed Grace’s original medical file.
At the top of the screen, highlighted in red, was a retrieval request for biological-chain documentation, embryo-transfer records, Daniel’s preserved genetic inventory, and sealed custody materials.
Olivia felt cold despite the blanket around her shoulders.
“They’re looking for Grace.”
Daniel was already dialing Vance.
The former federal investigator answered on the second ring.
“I’m looking at it,” Vance said before Daniel could speak. “Rachel called me first.”
“Can Margaret access the system from detention?”
“No.”
“Then who can?”
There was a pause.
“That’s what worries me.”
Daniel stood and walked toward the windows overlooking Central Park.
Vance continued.
“When federal agents seized Harrison’s clinic, they focused on the criminal procedure involving Rachel. But Mercer Family Reproductive Services wasn’t technically a clinic. It was a private administrative trust that contracted with multiple medical facilities.”
Daniel turned slowly.
“How many people had administrator-level authorization?”
“I’ve confirmed four.”
“Margaret. Harrison. Who else?”
“Your mother’s former trust attorney, Evelyn Price.”
Daniel recognized the name immediately.
“And the fourth?”
Another pause.
“Calvin Rourke.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
Olivia had met Calvin only twice. He had served as chief financial officer of the old Mercer family trust for nearly fifteen years. Quiet, immaculate, forgettable by design. He had resigned seventy-two hours after Margaret’s arrest and disappeared from every public board connected to the Mercer empire.
Daniel had assumed the man was running from scandal.
Now that assumption looked dangerously naïve.
Vance lowered his voice.
“Rourke didn’t just handle money. According to the old internal records, Margaret gave him authority over private insurance structures, offshore trusts, reproductive-service expenses, and succession planning.”
Olivia stepped out of bed.
“Where is he?”
“We don’t know.”
Daniel looked at her.
The answer was worse than they expected.
Vance continued.
“Federal prosecutors thought Rourke relocated to Singapore. His apartment was empty. His bank accounts were closed. His passport hasn’t been scanned anywhere in six weeks.”
“Then how did Rachel get this screenshot?” Olivia asked.
“Because someone tried accessing Grace’s adoption record through a connected archival server belonging to Bennett Logistics. Margaret used Rachel’s father’s company as one of the financial conduits. Their IT team received an automated security notification.”
Daniel swore under his breath.
A soft cry came through the baby monitor.
Grace.
Olivia immediately crossed the room.
Daniel followed her into the nursery.
Grace squirmed beneath a cream-colored blanket while Amelia slept beside her, one tiny fist tucked against her cheek.
Olivia lifted Grace gently.
The baby settled against her chest.
Daniel stared at his daughter and felt something violent move beneath his calm exterior.
Margaret was imprisoned.
Her assets were frozen.
The courts had severed every legal claim.
Yet someone was still reaching through the wreckage she left behind.
Someone who understood exactly where the Mercer family’s most dangerous secrets were buried.
His phone buzzed again.
This message came from Vance.
I FOUND ROURKE’S LAST DOMESTIC TRANSACTION.
Daniel opened the attachment.
It was a hotel invoice.
Manhattan.
Two nights ago.
The hotel stood eleven blocks from their penthouse.
Olivia looked over Daniel’s shoulder.
Then she saw the final line.
Calvin Rourke had not checked in alone.
The reservation had been made for two guests.
The second name made Olivia’s blood run cold.
Evelyn Price.
Margaret’s former attorney.
Daniel looked toward the dark nursery windows.

“They never left New York.”
And somewhere beneath Manhattan’s glittering skyline, two people who had helped Margaret Mercer build her secret empire were already making their next move.
