Chapter 26 - The Missing Witness

The message was traced within minutes.
Burner phone.
Public Wi-Fi.
No location.
Ward immediately placed every witness under increased protection.
Rachel was escorted to a secure hotel.
Lauren and Monica were moved to guarded rooms.
Calvin remained in federal custody.
Michael stayed with prosecutors.
Evelyn—
was missing.
Her protection detail found her hotel room empty at 6:40 a.m.
No broken lock.
No blood.
No struggle.
Her phone remained on the nightstand.
Daniel stared at Vance.
“She ran.”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“The room key log shows she left at 5:52.”
“Camera?”
“Disabled for eleven minutes.”
Olivia felt dread crawl through her.
Evelyn had been terrified of testifying.
But she had also seemed determined.
Ward delayed calling her as a witness while investigators searched.
Margaret’s attorneys immediately noticed.
During opening arguments, the defense portrayed Margaret as an aggressive businesswoman surrounded by people now rewriting history to protect themselves.
Then Rachel testified.
The courtroom became silent as she described Margaret approaching her during her father’s financial crisis.
The forged messages.
The Aspen setup.
The fertility procedure.
The threat of relocation.
The defense attorney attacked her credibility.
“You accepted five million dollars.”
“Yes.”
“You signed documents.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to your best friend.”
Rachel’s voice shook.
“Yes.”
“So when exactly did you become trustworthy?”
Rachel looked toward Olivia.
“After I stopped pretending fear excused what I did.”
The courtroom went quiet.
Rachel continued.
“I made choices I regret. Margaret exploited me, but I still made them. That is why I told the truth before I knew whether anyone would forgive me.”
The answer landed harder than denial could have.
Next came Lauren.
Then Monica.
The tapes supported them.
By afternoon, the prosecution’s case looked devastating.
Still, Evelyn remained missing.
Vance discovered the first clue at 4:10.
A traffic camera captured her entering a taxi.
Destination records led to Grand Central Terminal.
There, another camera showed Evelyn boarding a northbound train.
Alone.
“She isn’t kidnapped,” Daniel said.
“Not visibly,” Vance replied.
Then Olivia remembered something.
“Her daughter.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What daughter?” Ward asked.
Olivia had heard Evelyn mention one years earlier at a Mercer charity dinner.
A daughter named Claire.
Arthur searched.
Claire Price lived in Albany.
Federal agents reached the address.
The apartment was empty.
Neighbors reported seeing Claire leave with an older woman before dawn.
Evelyn.
Vance finally understood.
“Someone threatened her daughter.”
An hour later, Evelyn called Olivia.
Not Ward.
Not Arthur.
Olivia.
“I’m sorry.”
“Where are you?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Is Claire safe?”
Evelyn began crying.
“For now.”
“Who threatened her?”
“A man came to her apartment last night.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did he want?”
“For me to disappear until the trial ends.”
“Why not call police?”
“He showed me live photographs of Grace and Amelia.”
Olivia’s blood froze.
“What?”
“Your daughters were in the nursery.”
Olivia stood so fast her chair fell.
Daniel immediately called penthouse security.
The babies were safe.
No intrusions.
Then Vance realized.
“Long-lens camera.”
Someone had photographed through neighboring windows.
The image had been used to frighten Evelyn.
Olivia forced her voice steady.
“Listen to me. Whoever is threatening you wants you isolated. Tell us where you are.”
“No.”
“Evelyn.”
“If something happens to Claire—”
“Something will happen if you keep trusting the people who built this system.”
Silence.
Olivia continued.
“You forged Monica’s signature.”
Evelyn sobbed.
“I know.”
“You helped Margaret.”
“I know.”
“You cannot fix that by disappearing again.”
The phone remained silent.
“Come back,” Olivia said. “Not for us. Because this is the first chance you’ve had to choose differently.”
Evelyn whispered an address.
Vance wrote it down.
Federal agents reached the roadside motel outside Albany twenty-two minutes later.
Evelyn and Claire were unharmed.
In Evelyn’s purse, agents found the envelope left by the unidentified man.
Inside was a photograph of Grace and Amelia.
On the back appeared a handwritten warning.
TESTIFY, AND THE MERCER NURSERY BECOMES A CRIME SCENE.
Daniel stared at it.
Then Vance examined the handwriting.
His expression changed.
“I’ve seen this before.”
“Where?”
Vance pulled out a scan of the message attached to the black baby shoe.
Same letter formation.
Same pressure.
Same ink.
Calvin had claimed he sent the first warning.
Daniel turned slowly.
Calvin had lied.

And if Calvin hadn’t sent the package—
then the man already in federal custody knew exactly who had.
