Chapter 17 - The Boy Who Never Knew

Calvin Rourke refused to speak until Daniel arrived.
Ward hated the condition.
Daniel hated it more.
But three hours later, he sat across from the former trust officer inside a federal interview room.
Calvin looked thinner than he had in the surveillance photographs.
His expensive suit was wrinkled.
There were dark circles beneath his eyes.
Daniel placed both hands on the metal table.
“Where is the boy?”
Calvin stared at him.
“Safe.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“He lives with his mother.”
“Lauren Keane?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Vermont.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Does she know?”
“That you’re his biological father?”
Calvin shook his head.
“No.”
Daniel’s temper flared.
“You helped steal my genetic material, create a child, hide him for twelve years, and you’re telling me his mother doesn’t know?”
“Lauren knew the donor belonged to the Mercer family. Margaret told her the sample came from an anonymous branch relative.”
Daniel stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.
Ward remained beside the wall.
Olivia watched through the observation glass.
Calvin continued.
“Margaret selected Lauren because she was drowning in medical debt after her mother developed cancer. She offered her enough money to clear everything.”
“Why create Ethan?”
“Control.”
“Explain.”
Calvin looked ashamed.
“Margaret feared you would eventually reject the family empire. You were twenty-five, reckless by her standards, talking about leaving finance to build your own company. She wanted a biological fallback.”
Daniel stared at him.
“A replacement.”
“Yes.”
The word cut deeper than expected.
“What happened?”
“Lauren changed her mind.”
“About what?”
“Giving him up.”
Daniel sat again.
Calvin rubbed both hands over his face.
“After Ethan was born, Margaret’s attorneys arrived with custody documents. Lauren refused to sign. She threatened to expose everything.”
“So Margaret let her leave?”
“Not voluntarily.”
Calvin looked toward the mirrored glass.
“I helped Lauren disappear.”
Olivia’s eyebrows rose on the other side.
Daniel said nothing.
“That was the first time I betrayed Margaret,” Calvin admitted. “I created new identity records, moved Lauren and the baby to Vermont, and told Margaret the child had developed a medical condition that made him unsuitable as a successor.”
Daniel’s disgust sharpened.
“Unsuitable?”
“I’m telling you how Margaret thought.”
“Where is Ethan now?”
Calvin gave Ward the address.
Federal agents verified it before anyone moved.
Lauren Keane lived outside Burlington in a small farmhouse overlooking frozen fields.
She worked as a physical therapist.
Ethan attended a public middle school.
He played hockey.
He earned strong grades.
He had never used the Mercer name.
Daniel stared at the photographs Ward placed in front of him.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Olivia entered the room.
Daniel looked at her helplessly.
“What am I supposed to do?”
She sat beside him.
“First, you remember he already has a mother and a life.”
Daniel nodded.
“We don’t storm into it.”
“No.”
Calvin watched them.
“There’s another child.”
Olivia turned sharply.
“The girl?”
“Monica Shaw’s daughter.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Vance entered.
“You expect immunity while withholding information?”
“I’m not withholding it. Margaret handled that placement herself.”
“When?”
“Nine years ago.”
“What was the child’s name?”
Calvin hesitated.
“Sophie.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Another child.
Another life.
Another decision Margaret made with his body.
Olivia’s hand found his.
Calvin leaned forward.
“You need to understand something. Margaret didn’t think she was committing abuse. She believed blood gave her ownership.”
Daniel looked at him coldly.
“That’s not a defense.”
“I know.”
Ward placed the hard drive Calvin surrendered onto the table.
“What’s on it?”
“Everything I could recover from Greenwich before I destroyed the house server.”
Ward’s face hardened.
“You destroyed federal evidence?”
“I destroyed the tracking system.”
“Tracking whom?”
Calvin looked at Daniel.
“Ethan.”
The room went silent.
“Margaret monitored him for twelve years.”
Daniel felt sick.
“She knew he was alive?”
“She suspected. She never proved it.”
Calvin turned toward Olivia.
“And after Grace was born, she ordered me to find Ethan again.”
“From detention?”
“No.”
Calvin shook his head.
“She gave the order before Bedford.”
Vance frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Margaret knew the Rachel operation was collapsing.”
Calvin’s voice lowered.
“She intended to bring Ethan forward publicly as Daniel’s hidden son.”
Daniel understood immediately.
“A scandal.”
“A succession crisis.”
Calvin nodded.
“She planned to destroy your credibility, then use Ethan’s existence to regain leverage over the board.”
Olivia’s eyes hardened.
“She was going to use a twelve-year-old boy as a weapon.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stood.
“No more.”
He looked through the glass toward the snow outside.
“We protect him first.”
May you like
Then he turned back.
“And after that, we find Sophie.”
