Chapter 2 - The Staged Betrayal

The penthouse was silent after Margaret Mercer left, her heels echoing against the marble like the ticking of an executioner's clock. Daniel remained on his knees before Olivia, holding her cold, shivering fingers. She pulled her hands back slowly, not out of hatred, but out of absolute, paralyzing shock. Her entire world had been constructed on shifting sand. Her husband was innocent of adultery, yet guilty of blindness; her closest friend had sold her out for cold cash; and her mother-in-law was a ruthless monster willing to treat unborn children like portfolio assets.
“Olivia,” Daniel said, his voice ragged. “We’re leaving. Right now. I’m taking you somewhere safe where my mother’s private security can't touch us.”
“Safe?” Olivia laughed bitterly, wiping tears from her cheeks with the back of her sleeve. “Where is safe, Daniel? Your family owns the banks, the hospitals, the very air we breathe in this city. Rachel sat across from me on Tuesday and helped me fold onesies. She drank herbal tea, rubbed my belly, and told me I was going to be an incredible mother. All while she was carrying your biological child!”
“I know. God help me, I know,” Daniel choked out. He stood up, pacing the nursery like a caged animal. “In Aspen, Rachel knew I was stressed about the acquisition. She offered to bring drinks up to my suite. I had one glass of bourbon. Just one. And my head spun out of control. When I woke up, she was half-undressed, crying, telling me that we had crossed a line but that she would take the secret to her grave. She made me feel like the monster. She manufactured the guilt so I wouldn't question her if she ever approached me later.”
“She didn't just manufacture guilt, Daniel. She cashed in on it,” Olivia said, her mind beginning to snap into survival mode. The initial devastation was crystallizing into something colder, harder. “Your mother said Rachel received five million dollars upfront. Check her father’s company accounts. Bennett Logistics was supposed to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy back in May. They never did.”
Daniel snatched his phone from his suit pocket and dialled his personal private investigator, Marcus Vance—a former federal agent whose loyalty was bought and paid for exclusively by Daniel, bypassing family channels.
“Vance,” Daniel barked into the receiver as soon as the line clicked. “I need an immediate forensic audit on Rachel Bennett and Bennett Logistics. Look at domestic transfers into offshore shell accounts over the last eight months. Look at medical clinics outside the standard Manhattan networks. Find out which private facility handles Mercer Family Reproductive Services.”
“I’m on it, boss,” Vance’s deep voice responded without hesitation. “Is this related to Mrs. Mercer’s foundation?”
“It’s related to my mother committing high-level biological theft and human trafficking,” Daniel said coldly. “Find Rachel Bennett tonight. Trace her phone, her car, her credit cards. If she moves an inch, I want to know.”
He hung up and turned back to Olivia. Her face was pale, but her breathing had steadied. The soft-spoken woman who curated contemporary art and designed nursery murals had vanished. In her place stood a woman fighting for her unborn child’s future.
“We need Rachel’s medical file,” Olivia stated, her gaze locking onto Daniel’s. “The chart I found wasn't sent to me by accident. It was sent from an encrypted proton mail account. Why would someone leak Rachel's chart to me tonight, on the exact night you signed the merger?”
Daniel froze. His analytical mind, honed through years of corporate warfare, suddenly aligned with hers. “Margaret didn't want you to know. She came here to put out a fire because you called her. That means Margaret didn't send the leak. Rachel didn't send it either, because it destroys her leverage.”
“Then who did?” Olivia asked.
Before Daniel could answer, his phone buzzed in his palm. It was an incoming video call from an unlisted number. Daniel hit speaker and answered.
The screen lit up with the interior of a dimly lit luxury bedroom. Sitting on the edge of a king-sized mattress, clutching her rounded stomach with shaking hands, was Rachel Bennett. Her face was streaked with mascara, her hair unkempt, and her eyes wide with unadulterated panic.
“Daniel? Olivia?” Rachel’s voice shook through the phone speaker. “Please... you have to listen to me. I didn't want this. Margaret said if I didn't agree, she would destroy my father completely. She said he would spend the rest of his life in federal prison for accounting fraud!”
Olivia stepped forward, glaring down at the glowing screen. “You sold out our friendship, Rachel. You let her take Daniel’s genetic sample. You allowed a doctor to put his baby inside you!”

“I tried to stop it!” Rachel sobbed, rocking back and forth. “I’m the one who sent you the chart, Olivia! I leaked it tonight because Margaret’s team... they’re taking me to an airstrip in New Jersey in two hours. She’s flying me to a private compound in Switzerland. She told me I’m not allowed to leave Europe until the baby is delivered and surrendered to her trust. She’s going to take my baby, Olivia! She’s going to take Daniel’s child and make me disappear!”
