Chapter 20 - Evelyn’s Confession

Evelyn Price did not run far.
Federal agents found her that evening sitting alone inside a diner near Stamford.
She made no attempt to escape.
When Ward asked where Sophie was, Evelyn gave them the address immediately.
A suburban home outside New Haven.
The registered owners were Thomas and Rebecca Allen, both physicians.
They had adopted Sophie privately nine years earlier.
The adoption paperwork appeared legitimate.
The origins did not.
Daniel listened from across the interrogation table as Evelyn explained.
“Margaret never intended to raise Sophie.”
“Then why create her?” Daniel asked.
“Insurance.”
“That word again.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“Margaret believed multiple biological descendants gave her leverage over succession.”
“You people talk about children like stock options.”
“I know.”
“No. You knew then.”
Evelyn flinched.
Daniel pushed the photograph toward her.
“Why are you holding Sophie’s hand?”
“Because I visited her.”
“For nine years?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Evelyn’s composure cracked.
“Because I arranged the adoption.”
Olivia sat beside Daniel.
“Did the Allens know?”
“Not the truth. They believed Sophie came through a private closed adoption involving a young surrogate who voluntarily relinquished custody.”
“Monica didn’t relinquish custody.”
“I know.”
Olivia’s voice turned cold.
“You forged her signature.”
Evelyn nodded.
Daniel stood and turned away.
He had heard enough confessions to know remorse did not erase damage.
Ward continued.
“Why disappear today?”
“I went to warn the Allens.”
“About what?”
“That the media would find them.”
“Who leaked Ethan?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Ward slammed her palm against the table.
“Stop protecting people.”
“I’m not!”
For the first time Evelyn shouted.
Then she started crying.
“Calvin was right. Once Margaret lost control, everything began collapsing. We all spent years believing we could manage the consequences.”
Olivia stared at her.
“What does Sophie know?”
“Nothing about Daniel.”
“And Monica?”
“Nothing.”
“Then nobody contacts her until the child psychologist creates a plan.”
Evelyn nodded.
Daniel looked at Ward.
“The Allens are her parents.”
“Legally, there may be complications.”
“They raised her.”
“I understand.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice steadied.
“I’m making this clear now. I am not ripping a nine-year-old girl out of her home because Margaret ripped her out of someone else’s.”
Olivia looked at him with quiet relief.
“We find a way to tell the truth without repeating the abuse.”
For two days, attorneys worked to construct an emergency privacy framework.
Monica was brought into the process.
So were the Allens.
Their first meeting was devastating.
Rebecca Allen sobbed when she learned Sophie’s adoption had been built on forged consent.
Thomas sat silently for nearly fifteen minutes before asking one question.
“Can someone take our daughter away?”
Monica looked across the room at them.
She had spent nine years imagining the people who stole her baby.
Now she saw two terrified parents who had been deceived too.
“No,” Monica said.
Everyone looked at her.
“I’m not doing that to Sophie.”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Monica continued.
“I want to know her someday. If she wants to know me. But I won’t destroy her home to repair what was done to me.”
Olivia reached across the table and squeezed Monica’s hand.
Daniel watched and understood something his mother never had.
Love was not proven by possession.
Sometimes love was proven by refusing to claim what you could legally fight for.
That afternoon, investigators interviewed Sophie with her parents and a specialist present.
She learned that her adoption story was more complicated than she had been told.
She learned that Daniel was biologically related to her.
She learned she had siblings.
Sophie asked dozens of questions.
Then she asked for a photograph.
Daniel gave the specialist one showing Amelia and Grace asleep together.
Sophie stared at it for almost a minute.
“They’re tiny.”
Daniel smiled.
“Very.”
“Does Ethan know?”
Daniel blinked.
“How do you know Ethan?”
“The news.”
Of course.
Sophie looked at the photograph again.
“So he’s my brother?”
“Yes.”
She considered that.
“Can I meet him?”
Daniel’s eyes stung.
“If both of you want that.”
Sophie nodded.
Then Ward entered.
She was holding a phone.
Her expression was grim.
“We identified the source of the media leak.”
Daniel turned.
“Who?”
Ward looked toward Evelyn.
“Someone used a secure account created by your old law office.”
Evelyn stood.
“I didn’t leak anything.”
“We know.”
Ward faced Daniel.
“The account belongs to a former junior attorney.”
“Name?”
“Michael Trent.”
Evelyn went white.
“No.”
Daniel noticed.
“You know him.”
Evelyn stared at Ward.
“He wasn’t just a junior attorney.”
“What was he?”
May you like
Evelyn whispered the answer.
“Margaret’s illegitimate son.”
