Chapter 7 - The Hostile Takeover

By nine o'clock the following morning, Wall Street was in absolute pandemonium.
The recording of Sophia Carter’s arrest had gone viral across every news network and social media platform in the world. The hashtag #MorettiBetrayal was trending number one globally. Protesters were already gathering outside the headquarters of Moretti Aerospace in midtown Manhattan, holding signs that read Coward and Justice for Anna.
Inside the penthouse boardroom on the sixty-fifth floor, Vincent sat alone at the massive mahogany table. His suit was wrinkled, his tie loosened, an untouched glass of whiskey sitting beside a stack of red-stamped foreclosure notices.
The double doors swung open.
I walked in, followed by a team of twenty corporate attorneys and forensic accountants. I wore a tailored ivory power suit, looking radiant, poised, and utterly untouchable.
Vincent looked up. His eyes were hollow, bloodshot, the eyes of a condemned man waiting for the executioner's blade.
""You didn't waste any time,"" he croaked, his voice raw from crying all night.
""Time is money, Vincent. And you have run out of both,"" I replied, taking a seat at the head of the table—the seat his father had occupied for thirty years.
My lead attorney slid a single, thick document across the polished wood.
""What is this?"" Vincent asked, staring at it blankly.
""A surrender agreement,"" I said cleanly. ""Valkyrie Capital has acquired eighty-two percent of your institutional debt through Apex Sovereign. Furthermore, the board of directors met two hours ago in an emergency closed session. In light of the federal criminal investigation into Carter Logistics and your catastrophic fiduciary negligence, they voted unanimously to strip you of your CEO title and voting shares.""
Vincent’s hands shook as he looked at the paper. ""You’re taking everything. Moretti Aerospace... my grandfather built this company from a single propeller plane.""
""Your grandfather was an honorable man,"" I retorted. ""You are a coward who traded his company’s legacy and his family’s lives for an adulterous illusion. Sign the papers, Vincent. You surrender all equity, all real estate, all intellectual property. In exchange, Valkyrie Capital will assume your debts, saving you from a federal indictment for corporate bankruptcy fraud.""
Vincent closed his eyes. Tears leaked down his stubbled cheeks.
""I don't care about the money, Anna,"" he whispered, his voice cracking with absolute sincerity. ""Take the buildings. Take the jets. Take every single dollar I have in the bank. Burn it all down if it makes you happy. I just... I need to know about our son. Did he... did he feel any pain? Did he know I was coming back?""
My chest tightened for a split second, the fierce instinct of a protective mother flaring behind my ribs. But I kept my face an impenetrable mask of stone.
""He died knowing his father left him to burn,"" I said coldly. ""That is the legacy you carry to your grave, Vincent.""
A strangled sob tore from his throat. With trembling fingers, he picked up the gold pen from the table, flipped to the final page, and scribbled his signature across the line.
He pushed the paper toward me.
""It's done,"" he whispered, staring at his empty hands. ""I have nothing left.""
""No,"" I corrected, standing up and buttoning my jacket. ""You have your life. The very thing you denied me three years ago. Security will escort you out of the building. You have ten minutes to clear your personal desk.""
As I turned toward the door, Vincent called out one last time, his voice broken and hollow.
""Where will you go, Anna?""
May you like
I stopped at the threshold, glancing back over my shoulder.
""Somewhere you will never reach,"" I said. ""Goodbye, Vincent.""
