Chapter 10 - The Price and the Promise

Vincent’s legs gave out completely. He fell to his knees on the filthy concrete sidewalk of Queens, his hands clutching his chest as if his heart were tearing through his ribs. Great, racking sobs tore from his throat, soundless at first, and then breaking into an agonizing wail of pure, unadulterated relief and grief.

""He's alive...?"" Vincent gasped, looking up through a sheet of tears. ""My son is alive...?""

""He is four years old,"" I said, kneeling down so that I was at eye level with him, though I did not touch him. ""He is healthy. He is brilliant. He laughs just like you used to, before you let ambition and Sophia poison your soul.""

""Can I... can I see him?"" Vincent begged, pressing his forehead against the cold pavement at my feet. ""Anna, please! I will do anything. I won't ask for custody. I won't ask to be called 'Father.' I just want to see his face. Just once from a distance. Please, I beg you!""

I waited until he raised his head.

""You will not be his father today, Vincent,"" I told him, my voice firm, fair, and unshakable. ""A father is not defined by blood or a billionaire's trust fund. A father is the man who stays when the fire starts. Daniel Reyes stayed. Arthur Bennett stayed.""

Vincent nodded rapidly, tears washing clean paths through the soot on his cheeks. ""I know. I know I lost the right to be his father.""

""You lost the right to be his father,"" I agreed softly. ""But you have earned the right to be a man who seeks redemption. You will continue to work. You will continue to heal. In six months, if you remain sober, stable, and true to this new path, you may meet him at a park in the Hamptons. You will be introduced as an old family friend named Vincent. And over time... if you prove to him that you can be trusted, he will decide what place you hold in his life.""

Vincent stared at me, dumbfounded, as if I had just offered him the kingdom of heaven when he expected an eternity in hell.

""You're... giving me a chance?"" he whispered.

""I am giving my son the truth,"" I replied. ""And I am giving myself peace. Hating you kept me alive in the ashes, Vincent. But love is what builds a home. I refuse to let your past cowardice poison my son’s future.""

I stood up, pulling a business card from my pocket and placing it in his trembling palm. It was the contact for my personal office.

""Six months, Vincent. Don't make me regret this.""

I turned and walked back toward the waiting car.

When I opened the door, Daniel was waiting. He looked at me with an unspoken question in his warm, dark eyes.

""How do you feel?"" Daniel asked gently as I settled into the leather seat.

I looked out the window. Down the street, Vincent was slowly standing up, clutching the card to his chest as if it were the Holy Grail, looking toward the sky with a face transformed by hope.

""I feel free,"" I said, a genuine, radiant smile spreading across my face.

I reached across the console and took Daniel’s hand in mine. He looked down at our joined fingers, startled for a moment, and then his grip tightened with the warm, protective strength that had pulled me out of the fire four years ago.

""Let's go home, Daniel,"" I said softly. ""Leo is waiting for us.""

Two days later, the sun rose brilliantly over the ocean outside my Hamptons estate.

May you like

I stood on the wide wooden porch, holding a steaming mug of tea, the salty breeze dancing through my hair. Across the lawn, Leo was sprinting with his puppy, shrieking with laughter as Daniel chased him, lifting him high onto his broad shoulders like a hero.

My scars on my shoulder still caught the morning light, but they no longer burned. They were no longer a mark of victimhood; they were a badge of honor. A reminder that a woman can walk through the hottest fires of betrayal, rebuild an empire from the ashes, protect the ones she loves, and write her own happily ever after."
