Chapter 1 - The Fire and the Fall

The metallic crash behind us was not just collapsing luggage—it was the ceiling bulkhead caving in, bringing down severed electrical lines that spat blinding blue sparks into pools of hydraulic fuel. Flames caught instantly, racing up the plush wool carpet toward where Daniel and I stood. The heat hit my skin like a physical slap, singeing the edges of my hair. Black, caustic smoke swallowed the remaining daylight, turning the luxury jet into a suffocating furnace.
""Daniel, my water broke!"" I gasped, clutching my belly as another violent spasm bent me double. The agony was unreal, a knife twisting inside my pelvis while my lungs screamed for clean oxygen. ""The baby... it's too early!""
""I’ve got you, Anna! Don't look back!"" Daniel shouted over the roar of the fire. He was coughing violently, his grease-stained mechanic jumpsuit drenched in sweat, but his grip on my waist never wavered.
With desperate strength, he kicked the lower service latch. The small maintenance hatch popped outward with a deafening groan of bending steel. Cold, wind-whipped mountain air rushed into the inferno, clearing the smog just enough for me to see the ground eight feet below. We were stranded off the runway, perched on an embankment of rough gravel and wild grass.
""We have to jump! I'll catch you, I swear on my life!"" Daniel yelled, scrambling down the narrow exterior access ladder first.
Another contraction hit me so hard my vision blurred into static. Through the cracked cockpit windshield ahead, I could see outside. Two hundred yards down the runway, illuminated by flashing red sirens, stood Vincent. He was kneeling in the grass, tenderly cradling Sophia Carter against his chest, stripping off his bespoke suit jacket to wrap around her shoulders. Paramedics were rushing around them. Not once did he look back toward the burning fuselage where his pregnant wife was trapped. He had forgotten me. He had chosen his past over his future.
""Anna, NOW!"" Daniel's voice cut through the despair.
I let go of the doorframe and dropped. Daniel caught me against his broad chest, absorbing the brunt of the impact as we both tumbled hard into the dirt. Agony exploded across my lower back, but I was out. Behind us, a muffled boom shook the ground as the jet's left fuel tank ruptured, sending a towering fireball into the overcast sky.
""Stay low! Stay with me!"" Daniel dragged me behind an airport maintenance drainage ditch just as the entire cabin was engulfed in flames.
Lying in the dirt, clutching my swollen belly, I watched the wreckage burn. If I had waited ten more seconds for Vincent's promised return, my baby and I would be ashes. At that exact moment, the woman who loved Vincent Moretti died in the flames. In her place, a mother was born with iron in her veins.
""We can't go to the main runway, Anna,"" Daniel panted, his hands trembling as he examined the pooling blood on my leggings. ""There are news crews everywhere. If Moretti finds out you survived, his PR team will control the narrative. But worse... you're in active labor, and your baby is in distress. My brother runs an off-grid private clinic five miles away. Can you make it to my truck?""
May you like
""Get me away from him,"" I whispered, tears of pain and betrayal cutting tracks through the soot on my cheeks. ""Make sure Vincent thinks I burned in that plane. As far as the world is concerned, Anna Moretti is dead.""
Daniel looked into my eyes, saw the cold steel resolve, and nodded grimly. He lifted me in his arms, turning his back on the sirens, and carried me into the shadows of the airfield perimeter.
