Chapter 2 - Born from the Ashes

The pain came in relentless, crushing waves that felt as though my pelvis was being split apart with an iron crowbar. Daniel drove like a madman through winding backroads, his rusted pickup truck rattling over every bump as the sky wept a cold, driving rain. In the passenger seat, I bit down on my own sleeve until I tasted copper, refusing to scream, terrified that any sound might summon the ghost of the man who had abandoned me.
""Hold on, Anna! Two minutes! Just two minutes!"" Daniel’s knuckles were white on the steering wheel, his eyes darting between the rain-slicked road and my pale, trembling form.
We skidded into the gravel driveway of a secluded brick farmhouse marked only by a discrete medical cross. Before the engine even cut out, a man with graying hair and intense, focused eyes burst through the front door carrying an emergency kit. It was Dr. Marcus Reyes, Daniel’s older brother and a former military trauma surgeon who had left high-society medicine behind.
""Bring her into the trauma room now!"" Dr. Reyes commanded, barking orders to a waiting nurse as Daniel scooped me up.
The sterile smell of antiseptic washed over me as they laid me onto a cold operating table. Overhead lights blinded me. I felt scissors cutting away my soaked clothes, cold monitors sticking to my chest, and the terrifying, hollow sound of an ultrasound machine searching for a heartbeat.
Silence stretched for three agonizing seconds. Then—a faint, rapid gallop.
""Fetal heart rate is dropping—one hundred, now ninety-five,"" the nurse said, her voice tight with suppressed panic. ""Cord prolapse risk. The placenta is separating from the trauma.""
""We don't have time for a hospital transfer,"" Dr. Reyes said, looking down at me with fierce compassion. ""Anna, you're at twenty-nine weeks. If I perform an emergency C-section right now without a full anesthesiology team, it is going to hurt worse than anything you've ever felt. But it's the only way your son survives. Do you give me consent?""
""Cut me open,"" I gasped, tears leaking from the corners of my eyes as my fingers dug into the vinyl table. ""Save my son. Do not let Vincent's betrayal kill my child!""
What followed was a blur of searing agony, muffled metallic clinks, and the smell of cauterized skin. I squeezed Daniel’s hand so hard I thought I heard his knuckles crack, staring at the ceiling, chanting silently: Live, baby, live. Live for Mama.
And then, through the haze of shock and blood loss, a tiny, frail sound pierced the room.
It wasn't a roar; it was a fragile, squeaking wail, no louder than a kitten's meow. But to my ears, it was a symphony of vengeance and survival.
""A boy,"" Dr. Reyes breathed, wrapping a tiny, translucent red body into heated sterile blankets and immediately attaching a miniature oxygen mask. ""Two pounds, eleven ounces. He's breathing on his own, Anna. He's a fighter.""
They brought him close to my face for just a fraction of a second. His fingers were smaller than my fingernail, grasping weakly at the air. He had dark hair, just like the monster who fathered him, but his spirit was entirely mine.
""Leo,"" I whispered, touching his tiny forehead with a bloodstained thumb. ""His name is Leo.""
Outside the operating room, an old television set in the corner of the clinic flickered to life with breaking news. Daniel reached over and turned up the volume slightly.
On the screen, a reporter stood in the rain before the smoldering wreckage of Moretti Aerospace Flight 404. Vincent Moretti was standing beside an ambulance, wearing clean clothes, holding a weeping Sophia Carter against his chest as flashbulbs strobed against his grief-stricken face.
""Billionaire heir Vincent Moretti escaped with minor injuries alongside childhood companion Sophia Carter,"" the anchor announced somberly. ""Tragically, authorities confirm that Moretti’s pregnant wife, Anna Bennett Moretti, perished inside the cabin when rescue efforts were thwarted by an uncontrollable fuel explosion. Moretti released an official statement declaring her his eternal soulmate, vowing to honor her memory through a new philanthropic foundation...""
A bitter, chilling laugh ripped from my throat.

His eternal soulmate. He had abandoned me to burn, and now he was turning my supposed death into a public relations spectacle to rehabilitate his image and comfort his mistress.
""Let him believe I'm dead,"" I rasped, looking up at Daniel and Marcus. ""Help me disappear. When I come back, I won't just break his heart—I will dismantle everything he owns.""
