Chapter 3 - The Secret Bloodline

Recovery was a slow, agonizing descent into hell, but hate is an incredible painkiller.
For two months, little Leo fought for his life inside an improvised incubator in Marcus Reyes’s clinic. Every day, I sat beside that glass box, pumping breast milk drop by drop, watching his chest rise and fall. My own body was scarred—a deep, jagged line across my lower abdomen from the emergency surgery, and severe third-degree burns along my left shoulder where the flaming bulkhead had grazed me. I refused cosmetic surgery for the scar. I wanted it there. I wanted a permanent map of Vincent Moretti’s cowardice etched into my flesh.
During those long, sleepless nights, Daniel brought me old laptop computers, financial records, and discarded hard drives. Before marrying Vincent, I had been an honors graduate in financial engineering and corporate law from Columbia. I had built the algorithms that Vincent’s hedge fund used to make its first three billion dollars. Like a fool in love, I had signed away my intellectual property for a wedding band and empty promises.
""You need to see this,"" Daniel said one evening, sliding a thick manila folder onto my lap while Leo slept peacefully against my chest.
""What is it?""
""The flight logs from the day of the crash,"" Daniel said darkly. ""I went back to the hangar to retrieve my tools before the FAA locked it down. Anna... the jet's secondary fire suppression system was deliberately emptied forty-eight hours before takeoff. The seals were cut with a hydraulic snip.""
My breath hitched. ""It wasn't an accident?""
""Sophia Carter's family firm, Carter Logistics, handled the pre-flight safety inspection,"" Daniel whispered. ""Carter Logistics was on the verge of bankruptcy. Sophia needed Moretti’s fortune to bail them out, but Vincent’s prenuptial agreement with you stated that if you produced a male heir, seventy percent of his trust would be irrevocably tied to your son's legal guardian.""
The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying clarity. Sophia didn't just want Vincent back—she wanted the Moretti empire. And my unborn son was the only obstacle in her path. Vincent’s choice to carry her out first wasn't just a spontaneous reaction of panic; she had positioned herself to be saved, orchestrating a crisis that was meant to wipe me and my baby off the face of the earth.
""And Vincent?"" I asked, my voice deadly quiet. ""Did he know?""
""I don't think he planned the crash,"" Daniel admitted honestly. ""Vincent is arrogant, self-absorbed, and blinded by his savior complex for Sophia. But when the fire started, he made his choice. He saved her life and left you to burn. In the eyes of the law, that might be manslaughter. In my eyes, it's murder.""
""No,"" I replied, staring down at my sleeping baby boy. ""Murder is too kind for him. Death would grant him peace. I want him to watch his world crumble brick by brick, knowing that the woman he threw away is the architect of his ruin.""
Two weeks later, an unexpected knock shook the clinic's back entrance. An elderly man with silver hair, impeccably tailored in a charcoal Savile Row three-piece suit, stepped into the dimly lit hallway. Two broad-shouldered security agents flanked him.
I instinctively jumped up, shielding Leo’s crib with my body.
""Peace, child,"" the old man said, his voice deep, gravelly, and brimming with unyielding authority. He pulled a gold-tipped cane forward and looked at me with piercing blue eyes. ""You have your mother's fierce gaze, Anna.""
I gasped. ""Arthur Bennett?""
Arthur Bennett was the reclusive titan behind the Bennett Global Maritime and Energy conglomerate—a multi-billion-dollar empire that made Vincent Moretti look like a corner shop owner. My mother had been disowned by Arthur thirty years ago for marrying an artist. I had grown up thinking my grandfather was a ruthless monster who cared for nothing but oil tankers and sovereign debt.
""I buried my daughter because of my foolish pride,"" the old man said softly, a rare glimmer of moisture shining in his ancient eyes. ""I will not let my granddaughter and great-grandson die in the shadows. Daniel contacted my private office two weeks ago. He proved you were alive.""
Arthur walked slowly to the crib, gazing down at little Leo. A faint smile touched his weathered lips.
""Moretti thinks he owns this city,"" Arthur murmured, turning back to me. ""He thinks he is an untouchable king because he married the forgotten Bennett girl and watched her burn. He doesn't know who you really are, Anna. Come home to London with me. Let me teach you how to wage war with capital. When you return, you won't be a pleading wife begging for a seat on a plane. You will be the storm that swallows him whole.""

I looked at the burn scars on my arm, then at the little boy breathing safely under the blanket.
""Teach me,"" I said.
