Chapter 5 - The Red Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel dripped in sickening opulence. Crystal chandeliers cast warm golden light over five hundred of New York’s elite—hedge fund managers, corrupt politicians, socialites, and media moguls.

At the center of the room, standing beneath an arch of white orchids, was Vincent Moretti.

At thirty-six, he still possessed the sharp, aristocratic jawline and broad shoulders that had once made my foolish young heart race. But closer inspection revealed deep fissures in his veneer: dark circles beneath his hollow eyes, silver threading through his dark hair, and a restless, frantic energy that two glasses of vintage champagne couldn't hide. Guilt is an acid that eats a man from the inside out.

Beside him clung Sophia Carter, draped in a backless crimson couture gown and dripping in diamonds that Vincent could no longer afford. She was beaming, flashing an eight-carat emerald-cut diamond ring to a flock of fawning society reporters.

""Vincent and I have walked through so much tragedy together,"" Sophia was cooing into a microphone, her voice dripping with calculated sweetness. ""Losing our sweet Anna three years ago broke our hearts. But Vincent taught me that love must rise from the ashes. Tonight, as we celebrate Carter Logistics joining forces with Moretti Aerospace, we dedicate our future to Anna’s memory...""

""How touching,"" a clear, melodic voice rang out from the double doors at the back of the ballroom. ""It almost makes me cry. Almost.""

The entire room fell into an eerie, suffocating silence.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open. Two dozen private security guards in immaculate charcoal suits fanned out, clearing a path through the stunned crowd.

Walking down the center aisle, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor, was a ghost.

I wore a floor-length gown of midnight black silk, the neckline plunging just enough to display a flawless diamond choker, but my hair was swept to the right side, deliberately leaving my left shoulder bare. The pale, jagged burn scars were visible for every camera to capture. My dark hair fell in glossy waves, my red lips curved into an amused, dangerous smirk, and my eyes locked onto Vincent like a laser-guided missile.

Beside me walked Arthur Bennett, the living legend of global finance, his gold-tipped cane striking the floor with thunderous authority. And just behind us was Daniel Reyes, holding a sleek leather briefcase.

Gasps rippled through the room. Glasses shattered against the floor.

Vincent’s champagne flute slipped from his fingers, crashing into pieces at his feet. The color drained from his face until he looked like a corpse. His knees visibly buckled.

""A-Anna...?"" he stammered, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch. ""No... no, it's impossible. You... you died in the fire. I saw the plane explode!""

""You saw what you wanted to see, Vincent,"" I said, stopping ten feet from the stage, looking up at him with utter disgust. ""You saw an opportunity to abandon your seven-month-pregnant wife, save your mistress, and play the tragic, grieving widower for three years to maintain your stock price.""

""Anna, oh my God! You're alive!"" Sophia shrieked, taking a dramatic step forward, her hands flying to her mouth in faux horror. ""Vincent tried to save you! The flames were too high! The firefighters held him back!""

""Shut up, Sophia,"" I said, my voice quiet, flat, and chillingly clear. The microphone on the podium picked up every syllable. ""Your theatrics might work on a man who thinks with his ego, but they don't work on the majority shareholder of Carter Logistics.""

Sophia froze. ""What did you say?""

Daniel stepped forward, snapping open his briefcase, and handed a sheaf of gold-embossed legal documents directly to the banquet manager, who projected the digital scans onto the giant presentation screens flanking the ballroom.

""Carter Logistics went into default at five o'clock this evening on its two-hundred-million-dollar maritime debt,"" I announced to the room, watching the faces of New York’s elite morph into shock. ""The creditor was Valkyrie Capital. An hour ago, Valkyrie executed a full equity seizure. Sophia, you and your father don't own a single truck, a single cargo container, or a single share of stock. You are completely bankrupt.""

""Vincent!"" Sophia screamed, turning on him in a frenzy. ""Do something! You promised me Carter Logistics was safe! You promised me!""

Vincent wasn't listening to her. He was staring at me, his chest heaving, tears suddenly streaming down his pale cheeks. He stumbled down the steps of the stage, reaching his trembling hands out toward me.

""Anna... please,"" he choked out, completely unraveling before his peers. ""I swear to you, I came back! I ran back into the smoke, but the wing exploded! I've lived in hell every single day since that flight! Please, tell me... the baby? What happened to our baby?!""

I looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger. No grief. Only the cold, clean detachment of a judge reading a death sentence.

""Our baby died that day, Vincent,"" I lied smoothly, letting the dagger twist deep into his soul. ""The moment his father decided he wasn't worth saving.""
