Chapter 4 - The Phoenix Rises

Three years passed in the cold, gray drizzle of London and Zurich.

To the world, Anna Bennett Moretti was a tragic footnote in high-society history, her portrait hanging in a museum wing that Vincent had hypocritically funded in New York to pacify his guilty conscience. But inside the heavily fortified offices of Bennett Global, a ruthless financial predator was being forged.

Under my grandfather's ruthless mentorship, I mastered the dark arts of hostile takeovers, sovereign debt restructuring, and short-selling warfare. I traded late-night feedings for corporate balance sheets and lullabies for earnings calls. Every drop of sweat, every sleepless night, every ounce of pain from my surgical scars went toward building an unstoppable financial behemoth: Valkyrie Capital.

Valkyrie operated in the deep shadows, buying distressed corporate debt, acquiring silent minority shares, and infiltrating supply chains across the globe. Nobody knew who owned Valkyrie. The public only knew that when Valkyrie set its sights on a company, that company was either purchased or dismantled within ninety days.

Meanwhile, Daniel Reyes remained by my side, not as a mechanic, but as the head of my private corporate intelligence unit. He was fiercely loyal, impeccably sharp, and the only person outside of my grandfather who truly knew the depths of what had happened on that runway.

""Here is the latest intelligence report on Moretti Aerospace and Carter Logistics,"" Daniel said one afternoon, walking into my high-floor London office overlooking the River Thames.

He placed a sleek black tablet on my glass desk.

""Vincent is bleeding cash,"" Daniel explained, a cold smirk touching his lips. ""To impress Sophia, he poured over four hundred million dollars into her family’s shipping company, trying to keep Carter Logistics afloat. To fund it, he leveraged Moretti Aerospace’s commercial real estate holdings and took out massive high-interest loans from an offshore syndicate.""

""Which syndicate?"" I asked, my fingers tracing the rim of my espresso cup.

""Apex Sovereign,"" Daniel smiled. ""Which, through seven shell corporations in the Cayman Islands, is completely owned by Valkyrie Capital. In seventy-two hours, Vincent’s four-hundred-million-dollar balloon payment comes due. He doesn't have the liquidity to pay it.""

""And Sophia?"" I inquired.

""She’s spent the last three years living like a queen in his Manhattan penthouse. She’s convinced him that they need to throw an extravagant charity gala at the Plaza Hotel this Friday to announce their formal engagement and launch Carter Logistics’ new international expansion. She wants to show high society that she has finally taken your place.""

A cold thrill raced down my spine. The stage was set. The trap was sprung.

Just then, the office door clicked open. A handsome, three-year-old boy with unruly dark hair and bright, laughing hazel eyes came running across the hardwood floor, clutching a wooden toy airplane.

""Mama! Look how fast it flies!"" Leo giggled, throwing his arms around my knees.

I knelt down immediately, my cold corporate demeanor melting into pure, radiant maternal warmth. I picked him up, burying my nose in his sweet-smelling hair. He was healthy, strong, and brilliant—the greatest victory of my life.

""It flies very fast, my love,"" I whispered, kissing his cheek. ""But remember what Mama taught you?""

""Airplanes are just machines,"" Leo recited proudly, puffing out his small chest. ""It's the people inside who matter most.""

""That's right, my sweet boy,"" I said, handing him back to his nanny with a warm smile.

Once the door closed, I turned back to Daniel. The warmth vanished from my eyes, replaced by glacial blue ice.

""Book the private jet to New York,"" I ordered. ""And contact the chief liquidator at Apex Sovereign. I want the default notices served in person. At the Plaza Hotel. During their engagement toast.""
