Chapter 9 - Restitution and Honor

Adrien stood up, gesturing toward the dining table. Evelyn sat down, while Vivian laid the documents and the wooden jewelry box before her. ""Evelyn,"" Adrien began, his voice solemn and respectful. ""What happened to you was an atrocity committed by someone bearing my name. No amount of money can ever erase the fear you felt or the cold nights you spent in that basement. But my family will spend the rest of our lives making sure you and Lily are protected and honored, exactly as Serena intended."" Vivian opened the wooden box. Resting on a bed of black velvet was Serena’s diamond-studded Patek Philippe watch, gleaming brilliantly beneath the chandelier light. Evelyn touched the cool platinum bezel with trembling fingertips, fresh tears falling freely. ""Miss Serena wore this every single day,"" Evelyn whispered. ""She told me once that time was the only thing we could never buy back, so we had to spend it on the people who truly mattered.""
""She gave it to you, Evelyn,"" Adrien said firmly. ""And with it, she gave you freedom."" Thomas Whitaker stepped forward, opening the leather portfolio and laying out several notarized certificates. ""This is the fully restored Serena Valente Memorial Education and Living Trust,"" Thomas explained. ""It has been funded with the original three million dollars bequeathed by Miss Serena, along with an additional two million dollars in punitive damages transferred directly from Damian’s forfeited assets tonight. The funds are under your sole administrative authority. You will never have to worry about rent, healthcare, or Lily’s university education again."" Evelyn shook her head in disbelief, pressing her hands against her face, weeping tears of pure relief. ""Mr. Adrien... this is too much. I can't accept this. I was just her maid. I just cleaned her rooms and made her tea.""
""You were never just a maid to her,"" Adrien corrected softly, placing a comforting hand on her trembling shoulder. ""You were the friend who sat with her when she was too weak to smile. You were the woman who brought life and laughter into a lonely house. My sister loved you, Evelyn. Honoring her wish is not charity; it is my sacred duty as her brother."" Adrien slid one final document across the table. It was a deed to a beautiful, historic brownstone in the heart of Lincoln Park, just four blocks from Rosewood Bakery, complete with a private garden, a modern kitchen, and sunlit bedrooms. ""This home is yours. It has been fully furnished, staffed with trusted security, and deeded permanently in your name. You will never have to answer to a landlord, and no one will ever threaten your family again."" Evelyn looked from the deed to Adrien, her voice choked with emotion. ""How can I ever thank you, Mr. Adrien?"" Adrien looked down at Lily, who was happily eating a strawberry pastry at the edge of the table. ""You already thanked me, Evelyn. You taught your daughter that broken things can still be beautiful. Tonight, you helped put my family’s broken honor back together.""
