Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Corner

Ninety miles north of Chicago, the winter storm was hitting the outskirts of Milwaukee with howling fury. Outside a dilapidated roadside motel off Interstate 94, the neon sign flickered erratically through sheets of driving snow. In Room 114, Clara Simmons sat on the edge of a stained mattress, frantically stuffing designer clothes, expensive jewelry, and stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills into two leather suitcases. Ever since Evelyn Carter’s sudden dismissal, Clara had been living on borrowed time. She knew how the Valente machine operated. Damian Valente had promised her seventy-five thousand dollars and safe passage to Florida, but Clara was not stupid; she knew that loose ends in this business rarely lived long enough to enjoy their retirement. Every creak of the motel roof, every pair of headlights sweeping across the drawn plastic blinds, sent ice through her veins.

Her fears materialized with terrifying suddenness. Without the slightest warning, the heavy wooden door frame splintered in an explosive crack. The deadbolt tore completely free from the drywall as two hulking men in charcoal trench coats breached the room with lethal speed and military precision. Before Clara could even scream, she was pushed backward onto the mattress, her arms pinned, while a third figure stepped calmly through the shattered entrance. Vivian Brooks brushed a dusting of snow from her cashmere lapel, walked into the center of the dingy room, and surveyed the open suitcases with icy disdain. ""Good evening, Clara,"" Vivian said, her voice smooth, cultured, and devoid of warmth. ""Packing in such a hurry? And without leaving a forwarding address with human resources? That’s remarkably unprofessional for an estate supervisor.""

Clara thrusted her back against the headboard, hyperventilating in sheer terror. ""Vivian... please! I didn't want to do it! Damian forced me! He told me he’d have my brother’s business shut down if I didn't sign that statement against Evelyn!"" Vivian tilted her head slightly, gesturing to one of the operatives. The man grabbed the smaller leather bag from the bed, unzipped it, and dumped its contents onto the laminate desk. Alongside thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills wrapped in Apex Logistics security tape was a velvet pouch. Vivian reached down, untied the gold drawstring, and tipped the contents into her gloved palm. Out tumbled Serena Valente’s diamond-studded Patek Philippe watch, its platinum bezel catching the harsh fluorescent light of the motel room. Vivian’s gaze turned to pure steel. ""You told Damian you flushed the watch down the storm drain to ensure Evelyn couldn't produce it to prove her innocence,"" Vivian noted calmly. ""Instead, you got greedy and kept it. Damian paid you seventy-five thousand dollars to destroy an innocent mother and child, and you kept the trophy.""

""I’ll tell Adrien everything!"" Clara sobbed uncontrollably, dropping to her knees on the filthy carpet, clasping her hands together in desperate supplication. ""I have the voice recordings on my phone! Damian met me in the basement garage three days before the setup! He told me word for word what to write on the theft report! He said he needed Evelyn gone before the end of the fiscal quarter so the trust funds would automatically revert to his operational account! I’ll sign whatever confession you want! Just please... don't let Adrien kill me!"" Vivian looked down at the weeping woman with profound disgust. She pulled an encrypted digital recorder from her coat pocket, set it on the desk, and pressed the red button. ""You are going to speak very clearly into that microphone, Clara. You will state your name, your role, and every single instruction Damian Valente gave you. And then, you are going to get into the back of our car and take a very quiet ride back to Chicago. If you omit a single syllable, I will leave you in this room and let Damian discover that you kept Serena’s watch. Understand?"" Clara nodded frantically, tears streaming through her smeared mascara, and began to speak.
