Chapter 10 - Sweet Beginnings

Six months later, Chicago’s bitter winter had surrendered to the glorious warmth of late spring. The trees along Lincoln Park were bursting with emerald-green leaves, and the fragrant scent of blooming lilacs drifted on the gentle breeze blowing off Lake Michigan. On the corner of the sunlit avenue, Rosewood Bakery was bustling with neighborhood patrons enjoying iced coffees and fresh fruit tarts at outdoor cafe tables. The cheerful brass bell above the bakery’s front door chimed as the door swung open. Margaret Ellis, wearing her pristine white baker’s apron, looked up from the glass counter with a bright, welcoming smile. ""Well, look who decided to grace my bakery on a Saturday morning!""

Walking inside was Lily Carter, now five years old, radiating health, joy, and boundless energy. She wore a bright yellow sundress with matching ribbons in her hair, her cheeks rosy and full of life. Behind her walked Evelyn Carter. The exhaustion, fear, and sorrow that had once aged her face were completely gone. Dressed in an elegant cream-colored linen blouse and dark slacks, Evelyn looked vibrant, beautiful, and utterly at peace. On her wrist, catching the morning sunlight streaming through the bakery window, sat Serena’s platinum diamond watch—a constant, sparkling reminder of friendship, loyalty, and justice. And walking beside Evelyn, wearing a casual navy blazer with an open collar, was Adrien Valente. Over the past six months, Adrien had become a constant, protective presence in their lives, visiting the Lincoln Park brownstone every weekend, helping Lily build elaborate Lego castles, and finding in their warm, uncomplicated home the true family he had thought died with his sister.

""Good morning, Miss Margaret!"" Lily beamed, skipping up to the counter on her tiptoes. She proudly reached into a small crossbody purse and pulled out a single, shiny gold dollar coin. ""I came to buy the biggest strawberry cake you have! And this time, it doesn't have to be broken!"" Margaret chuckled warmly, placing both hands on the glass counter. ""For my favorite customer, only the freshest cake in the entire city of Chicago."" Margaret disappeared into the back kitchen and emerged moments later carrying a magnificent two-tiered vanilla sponge cake adorned with fresh glazed strawberries, whipped buttercream, and a delicate white chocolate ribbon. Margaret accepted the gold dollar coin with grand ceremony. ""Paid in full, Miss Carter.""

Adrien picked up the cake box, tying the red silk ribbon securely around the top. He looked down at Lily, who slipped her small, warm hand into his large, scarred palm without a moment’s hesitation. ""Are you ready to head to the park, little one?"" Adrien asked, his eyes crinkling with genuine affection. ""Yes!"" Lily cheered, swinging their joined hands. ""Adrien promised we can feed the ducks and get ice cream after!"" Evelyn smiled, reaching over to adjust the crooked ribbon in Lily’s hair, her eyes meeting Adrien’s with deep, unspoken gratitude and a tender affection that had grown deeper with every passing day. Damian was gone, serving a twenty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary for corporate fraud, while Evelyn had launched a charitable foundation in Serena’s name to support single mothers across the city. As the three of them walked out of Rosewood Bakery together into the bright, warm sunshine of Lincoln Park, the past was finally at rest, and the future was as sweet and limitless as the clear blue Chicago sky."
