Chapter 3 - The Broken Promise

Inside the frigid basement on 54th Street, Adrien lowered his phone. His knuckles turned stark white against the dark leather of his gloves. For three long years, he had buried himself in grief, convinced that walking through Serena’s bedroom or looking at her belongings would tear open wounds that could never heal. He had stepped back from the day-to-day administration of the residential estate, trusting his cousin Damian to oversee the domestic staff and manage the family properties. In doing so, he had handed the keys of the sanctuary to a ravenous wolf. Adrien looked up from his phone and saw Evelyn standing near the kitchen counter, carefully slicing the soft vanilla cake for Lily. The little girl was humming a childish melody, her tiny cheeks flushed pink from the weak warmth of the electric heater. Every detail of their suffering landed on Adrien’s conscience like lead weights.

""Evelyn,"" Adrien said, keeping his voice gentle so as not to startle the child. ""Sit down. Please."" Evelyn placed the paper plates down and took a cautious seat on the edge of the worn sofa. Adrien pulled an old wooden chair across the floor, reversed it, and sat directly across from her. ""I just spoke with Vivian. She recovered Serena’s private inventory documents from three years ago. The ones Damian hid from the family probate attorneys."" Evelyn’s eyes welled with sudden, overwhelming tears, and she dropped her gaze to her lap, her trembling hands twisting the hem of her oversized sweatshirt. ""Miss Serena told me about it the week before she passed,"" Evelyn whispered, a single tear spilling over her lashes. ""She called me into her study. She held my hands and told me that she knew how hard I worked to provide for Lily after her father walked out. She told me she had set up a trust so Lily would never have to worry about school or medical care. And she told me she wanted me to have her mother's diamond watch.""

Evelyn wiped her face with a shaking sleeve, her voice cracking with the raw pain of betrayal. ""The day Miss Serena was buried, Mr. Damian cornered me in the hallway outside the master suite. He told me that if I ever mentioned that conversation to you, or if I dared to speak to a lawyer, he would call Child Protective Services and tell them I was an unfit mother who ran drugs out of the servant quarters. He said a maid’s word was worth nothing against a Valente. I was terrified, Mr. Adrien. I didn't care about the money. I just wanted to protect my daughter. So I kept my mouth shut. I worked twelve-hour shifts, scrubbing floors and cleaning rooms, hoping he would just forget about me. But eighteen days ago, he called me into his office. He slammed a velvet jewelry box onto his desk, pointed a finger in my face, and screamed that the watch was missing. Within ten minutes, two of his private security guards threw all my belongings into garbage bags and escorted me off the property. They told the leasing office at my old apartment that I was under criminal investigation, and our landlord evicted us within forty-eight hours.""

Adrien felt an icy calm settle over his senses. When men in his world allowed their temper to flare into blind rage, they made mistakes. True vengeance required surgical precision, unyielding patience, and absolute thoroughness. He looked at Evelyn, noting the dark circles under her eyes, the hollows in her cheeks from skipped meals, and the stoic dignity that had kept her going despite unbearable cruelty. ""Serena was a brilliant judge of character,"" Adrien said quietly, his gaze piercing and steady. ""She loved you because your heart was pure, Evelyn. And she trusted me to protect the people she cared about. I failed that trust for three years because I allowed my grief to blind me to the snake slithering in my own house. But that ends tonight."" Adrien stood up, reached inside his tailored overcoat, and pulled out his black leather wallet. He extracted a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills and placed it gently on the wooden coffee table beside Lily’s paper plate. ""This is not charity. This is an advance on the back pay and damages owed to you by the Valente estate.""

Lily looked up from her cake, her eyes widening at the green paper on the table. ""Mommy, is that magic paper?"" she asked innocently. Evelyn stared at the money, tears flowing freely down her cheeks, unable to speak. ""Pack one small bag of essential items for yourself and Lily,"" Adrien instructed softly, his tone brooking no argument. ""Leave the rest. You will never set foot in this freezing basement again. My driver is waiting around the corner in a heated suburban. He will take you both directly to the Peninsula Hotel downtown, where a private executive suite has already been registered in your name under my personal account. There will be hot food, warm clothes, and private medical staff to examine Lily’s cough."" Evelyn looked up at him with desperate gratitude. ""Mr. Adrien... Damian will find out. He has men everywhere in the organization."" Adrien allowed a cold, humorless smile to touch his lips. ""Let him find out. It will save me the trouble of hunting him down.""
