Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Suite

While the Valente empire purged its treasonous rot on Michigan Avenue, a completely different world had opened up for Evelyn and Lily Carter at the Peninsula Hotel. For the first time in eighteen agonizing days, Evelyn felt the paralyzing weight of terror begin to lift from her chest. The executive suite on the fourteenth floor was a warm, palatial sanctuary overlooking the snow-covered treetops of Water Tower Park. A grand marble fireplace crackled with fragrant birch logs, filling the room with comforting warmth. Thick, plush carpets cushioned their feet, soft velvet robes hung in the heated master bathroom, and a lavish room-service cart rested in the dining alcove, piled high with roasted chicken, fresh vegetables, steaming hot chocolate with marshmallows, and an assortment of fresh pastries.
Lily, wearing a brand-new pair of soft flannel pajamas that Adrien’s staff had arranged to be delivered, was spinning in circles across the carpet, giggling with pure, unrestrained joy. Her harsh cough had already begun to subside after a private pediatrician, quietly dispatched by Vivian earlier that evening, administered safe pediatric medicine and confirmed that the child was suffering only from mild cold exposure and fatigue. ""Mommy! Look at the bed!"" Lily shouted, running toward the master bedroom and throwing herself onto the massive king-sized down mattress. ""It’s like jumping on a cloud! A giant, warm, fluffy cloud!"" Evelyn stood by the crackling fireplace, watching her daughter laugh, tears streaming quietly down her cheeks. For weeks, she had cried herself to sleep in the dark, praying for a miracle while calculating whether she could afford milk or heating oil. Now, looking at her daughter’s radiant, smiling face, Evelyn felt as though she had emerged from a suffocating nightmare into brilliant daylight.

A soft knock sounded at the suite’s door. Evelyn walked over and opened it. Adrien Valente stood in the doorway. He had shed his heavy overcoat, wearing only his tailored charcoal suit and crisp white shirt. The lethal, terrifying aura that had dismantled Damian hours earlier was completely gone, replaced by a quiet, protective gentleness. Behind him, Vivian Brooks carried a polished wooden jewelry box and a leather-bound legal folder. ""May we come in, Evelyn?"" Adrien asked gently. Evelyn wiped her cheeks and nodded, stepping aside. ""Please, Mr. Adrien. Please come in.""
Lily immediately sprinted across the room, wrapping her tiny arms around Adrien’s leg without an ounce of fear. ""Bakery man! Did you see the cloud bed? It’s bigger than our whole old house!"" Adrien’s usually stern face softened into a genuine, warm smile. He crouched down to Lily’s eye level, just as he had done at Rosewood Bakery. ""I did see it, Lily. And it belongs to you and your mother for as long as you want."" Adrien reached into his pocket and pulled out a small cloth pouch—the very same pouch Lily had left on the bakery counter. He placed it gently into her tiny hands. ""And Margaret from the bakery asked me to return this to you. She said that a brave girl who takes care of her mother should always keep her lucky pennies."" Lily gasped with delight, clutching the pouch to her chest like a priceless treasure. Evelyn watched the mafia boss interact with her daughter with such tender humanity, her heart swelling with an emotion so powerful it took her breath away.
