Chapter 7 - Public Reckoning

Adrien nodded slightly toward Vivian Brooks. Vivian stepped forward onto the terrace, unzipped the leather folder, and pulled out a high-resolution wireless tablet connected directly to the ballroom’s massive overhead projection screens, which had previously been displaying corporate logos. With a single swipe of her thumb, the screens flickered and switched to a live audio-video playback. Clara Simmons appeared on the giant screens, seated in a secure holding room, weeping openly as she confessed every detail of Damian’s plot. Her voice echoed throughout the Grand Horizon with horrifying clarity: “Mr. Damian told me that Miss Serena had left a three-million-dollar trust and her mother's diamond watch to Evelyn Carter. He said Evelyn had to be destroyed before the quarterly probate audit. He paid me seventy-five thousand dollars through Apex Logistics to forge the theft complaint, and he used Adrien’s forged signature stamp to expel her into the street.”
The ballroom erupted in stunned, horrified gasps. High-ranking syndicate lieutenants who held deep respect for the late Serena stared at Damian with open venom. Damian’s face turned an ashen shade of gray. ""It’s a lie!"" Damian screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek of panic. ""She’s a disgruntled maid trying to save her own skin! You’re taking the word of domestic servants over your own blood, Adrien?!"" Vivian stepped forward again, reaching into her pocket. She held up Serena’s diamond-studded Patek Philippe watch, letting the platinum links dangle under the bright chandelier lights. ""We recovered this from Clara Simmons’s motel room in Milwaukee two hours ago, Damian,"" Vivian announced coldly. ""Along with seventy-five thousand dollars in sequentially numbered bills traceable directly to your personal offshore wire at noon on December fifth.""

Thomas Whitaker stepped forward next, holding a stack of legal notices bearing the official blue seal of the Cook County Superior Court. ""Furthermore, Damian, our forensic audit has identified seventeen unauthorized property transfers and forty-two forged corporate minutes bearing Mr. Adrien Valente’s simulated signature. Under the family charter established by your grandfather, the penalty for treason, forgery, and embezzlement against the estate is total forfeiture of all rank, assets, and surname privileges."" Thomas handed the papers to two burly enforcers who flanked Damian, pinning his arms behind his back before he could make a move to run. Damian thrashed wildly against their iron grip, spitting curses, the veneer of high-society elegance completely shattered.
Adrien stepped into Damian’s personal space, leaning down so that his eyes burned directly into his cousin’s terrified soul. ""You took everything from a widowed mother who loved my sister,"" Adrien whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal intensity. ""You let her four-year-old child freeze in a basement with eighty-seven pennies in a cloth pouch while you stood here drinking vintage champagne in a five-thousand-dollar tuxedo. You dishonored my sister’s memory, and you defiled our family name."" Adrien turned to the room, his voice ringing out like a gavel striking iron. ""Damian Valente is stripped of all authority, all holdings, and all protection under this syndicate. Every dollar in his private accounts has been seized. His luxury vehicles, his Gold Coast penthouse, and his corporate shares are forfeit. If any man in this city offers him shelter, employment, or a single dime of assistance, you will answer to me personally."" Adrien looked back at the sobbing, broken man. ""Get him out of my sight. Throw him into the snow without a coat, just like he did to Evelyn."" The enforcers dragged Damian down the stairs, his pathetic screams echoing until the heavy bronze doors slammed shut behind him.
