Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

The cold harbor wind tore at Dante’s coat as he burst through the rusted catwalk door onto the open wooden pier.

Rain had started to fall in heavy, freezing sheets. Fifty yards ahead, Vance was stumbling toward a twin-engine cigarette boat tied to the pilings. He was dragging a heavy canvas duffel bag behind him—the backup initiator.

""Vance!"" Dante’s voice cut through the howling gale like thunder.

Vance spun around, slipping on the slick, moss-covered timber of the dock. Desperate, he pulled a compact submachine gun from beneath his coat and opened fire.

Dante threw himself behind a heavy wooden mooring bitt as bullets splintered the aged timber into deadly shrapnel. One round grazed Dante’s left shoulder, tearing through his wool coat and scoring a fiery line of white-hot pain across his flesh.

Dante gritted his teeth, refusing to give ground.

Through the pouring rain, Bruno charged across the pier, closing the distance on Vance with breathtaking speed.

""Get off me, you mutt!"" Vance shrieked, swinging the barrel of his weapon toward the dog.

""Bruno, down!"" Dante shouted.

The dog dropped flat onto the wet wood just as a burst of automatic fire ripped through the empty air above him. The distraction was all Dante needed.

Dante stepped out from behind the mooring post, raising his Sig Sauer with steady hands. He fired twice.

The first round hit Vance in the right shoulder, spinning him around and knocking the machine gun out of his grip into the churning black water below. The second round shattered Vance's knee, dropping the cartel boss screaming onto the wet deck.

Dante walked forward slowly, his boots thudding against the rain-soaked planks. Blood dripped steadily from his left sleeve, staining the timber, but his eyes never wavered.

Bruno stood over Vance, his chest heaving, a menacing growl vibrating in his throat.

Vance dragged himself backward until his spine slammed against the pier’s safety railing. He looked up at Dante, terrified, his face pale and slick with rain and sweat.

""Wait... wait, Dante!"" Vance begged, clutching his bleeding shoulder. ""I have offshore accounts. Thirty million in Swiss holdings. I can transfer the routing numbers right now! Just let me take the boat!""

Dante stood over him, looking down with cold, unblinking detachment. ""Three years ago, an honest accountant named David Carter was driven off a bridge because he stood between you and your greed.""

Vance’s eyes widened with horrifying realization. ""You're... you're doing this for him? You didn't even know the man!""

""No,"" Dante said quietly, raising his weapon until the cold steel barrel pressed directly against the center of Vance’s forehead. ""I'm doing this for his daughter. She had to walk through the cold with one shoe because of you.""

""Dante, please—""

Click.

The hammer came back.

From behind them, sirens wailed in the distance. The flashing red and blue lights of federal law enforcement cruisers were already speeding down the access road toward Pier 14. Dante had timed the jamming drop perfectly; the anonymous tip Enzo had sent to the FBI bomb squad had just paid off.

Dante looked at the terrified rat shivering beneath his gun. He slowly lowered the weapon.

""Dying quickly in the rain is too good for you, Viktor,"" Dante said coldly. ""You're going to spend the next forty years in a federal supermax facility with no windows and no parole. And every single day, you're going to remember that a kindergarten girl took down your empire.""

Dante drove the heel of his boot into Vance's jaw, knocking the man unconscious onto the deck.

He turned to Bruno. ""Come on, boy. Let's go home.""
