Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The study door clicked open, and Enzo Bellini walked in without knocking, carrying a stainless-steel forensic kit. His grizzled face looked grimmer than usual as he set the small pink sneaker down on Dante’s desk.
Using a razor-thin scalpel, Enzo carefully sliced away the inner rubber heel liner. With a pair of tweezers, he extracted an ultra-slim, encrypted SanDisk drive, its black plastic casing scored with tiny scratches.
""She’s telling the truth, Boss,"" Enzo said, plugging the drive into a disconnected, air-gapped laptop. ""The drive has full schematics of the Harbor Gala ballroom, structural load-bearing points for the pier foundation, and the radio frequency trigger codes. Vance isn't just trying to cause panic. He calculated the exact structural pillars to blow so the entire convention center drops straight into the harbor.""
Dante stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the darkened grounds. The city skyline twinkled in the distance across the water—peaceful, oblivious, and entirely vulnerable.
""Five hundred innocent people will be in that building on Saturday,"" Anna said, her voice breaking. ""Civilians, waiters, musicians, families. If you just call the police—""
""The police won't touch Pier 14 without a warrant signed by a federal judge,"" Dante said coldly, not turning around. ""And the moment Vance sees squad cars assembling, he triggers the backup detonators or relocates the bombs into public subway cars. You don't fight a viper by stepping on its tail. You cut off its head while it’s still sleeping in its nest.""
Suddenly, the red landline on Dante’s desk rang.
It was an unlisted, hardwired line that only three people in the world had the number to.
Dante picked up the receiver and pressed it to his ear without speaking.
A harsh, raspy voice with a thick Slavic accent filtered through the speaker. ""Good evening, Dante. I hear you’ve taken in some strays today.""
Dante’s eyes narrowed into slits, but his voice remained smooth as velvet. ""Viktor. I didn't realize you were allowed out past your bedtime.""
""Let’s not play games, Moretti,"" Viktor Vance snarled. ""Your dogs picked up my collection crew outside the Carter girl’s apartment. Anna has property that belongs to me. A very valuable flash drive. And she owes a debt that has come due.""
""The girl and her mother are guests under my roof,"" Dante said, each word dropping like an iron ingot. ""And your two thugs are currently enjoying the hospitality of my concrete basement. They won't be returning to work.""
A low, grating laugh echoed over the line. ""You think you're untouchable inside that fortress, Dante? You think because your father controlled this city twenty years ago, you're the king forever? I know you have the drive. But you don't know where the crates are stored. You don't know which trucks are already rolling through the city checkpoints.""
Viktor’s tone turned vicious. ""Here is my offer: Bring the girl, the mother, and the drive to the old fish processing plant at Pier 14 by midnight tomorrow. You walk away, and your estate stays standing. Refuse, and the first charge goes off at your little sister’s private school in Cambridge tomorrow at noon.""
Dante’s heart gave a single, violent thud, but his face remained an absolute mask of stone. ""If you so much as breathe near my family, Vance, I will tear down every brick you've ever stood on.""
""Midnight tomorrow, Moretti. Don't be late.""
The line clicked dead.
Dante lowered the phone slowly. Anna was watching him, trembling, having heard the exchange. ""What did he say? Did he threaten Sophie?""
""No,"" Dante lied smoothly, looking directly into her frantic eyes. ""He made a mistake. He assumed I negotiate.""
He turned to Enzo. ""Call every loyal captain we have left. Mobilize the docks. I want Vance's supply lines cut by morning. And tell Rico to double the perimeter guard on this house.""
Anna covered her face with her hands, breaking down into silent, racking sobs. Dante walked over to her chair. For a man whose life had been defined by violence and vengeance, the gesture was unfamiliar, but he placed a large, firm hand on her shaking shoulder.
""Look at me, Anna,"" Dante ordered softly.
May you like
She looked up through wet lashes.
""Nobody hurts that little girl,"" Dante promised, his voice carrying the absolute weight of a signed decree. ""Not Vance. Not anyone. You survived three years in hell protecting her. Now let me finish it.""
