Chapter 10 - A New Step Forward

Six months later, the Moretti estate was no longer the silent, forbidding fortress it had once been.

The heavy wrought-iron gates were still there, and the security team still patrolled the perimeter with vigilant precision, but the cold, oppressive atmosphere of fear had completely vanished. In its place, the sound of childish laughter echoed across the marble terraces.

On a bright, crisp Saturday morning, the estate garden was filled with blooming white hydrangeas and fresh yellow roses.

A small, high-tech research greenhouse had been constructed on the south lawn. Anna Carter, now the lead researcher of a fully funded bio-agricultural lab established under Moretti Holdings, walked down the stone pathway carrying a tablet of chemical soil analysis reports. She wore a tailored beige suit, her hair flowing freely over her shoulders, her face radiating health, confidence, and peace.

Behind her, Sophie came bounding out of the house, wearing a bright yellow sundress and two brand-new, light-up pink sneakers.

""Bruno! Look! They flash when I stomp!""

Sophie stamped her feet aggressively on the stone patio. The heels of her sneakers flashed bright neon blue and red.

Bruno, who was lying peacefully in the warm sun near the fountain, let out a short, approving ""woof"" and wagged his tail against the stone, though he made no move to steal this pair. He had learned his lesson, but he never left Sophie’s side by more than ten yards.

Dante stepped out onto the veranda, holding two mugs of fresh coffee. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the faded scars on his arms. The cold, ruthless aura that had once terrified judges and politicians had softened into an air of calm, unshakeable authority.

He handed one mug to Anna, his fingers brushing against hers. Neither of them pulled away.

""How are the soil purification tests going?"" Dante asked, looking out over the garden.

""Ahead of schedule,"" Anna smiled, leaning gently against his side. ""The university wants to publish the initial findings on environmental soil restoration next month. None of it would have been possible without your funding, Dante.""

""You did the work, Anna. I just provided the dirt.""

Sophie ran up to them, skidding to a halt on her light-up shoes and wrapping her arms around Dante’s legs.

Dante didn't hesitate. He reached down with his strong arms and lifted the five-year-old up onto his hip with practiced ease. Men twice his size had trembled before him, but now Dante Moretti was carrying a little girl who was happily inspecting his hair for gray strands.

""Dante,"" Sophie said with absolute gravity.

""Yes, Sophie Carter?""

""Are we getting ice cream today?""

""Sophie,"" Anna scolded gently, laughing. ""You had ice cream yesterday.""

""Yesterday was Friday,"" Sophie argued, looking at Dante with wide, persuasive blue eyes. ""Today is Saturday. That’s a completely different rule.""

Dante looked at Anna, a deep, resonant laugh bubbling up from his chest. ""Her logic is airtight, Anna. You can't argue with constitutional law.""

""You spoil her,"" Anna said, her eyes shining with warmth and unmistakable affection.

""Someone has to make up for lost time,"" Dante replied softly, his gaze locking onto Anna’s with a promise that went far beyond words. He lowered Sophie gently to the ground. ""Go tell Angelo to get the car ready, Sophie. Double scoops for everyone.""

""Yay!"" Sophie squealed, taking off across the terrace with Bruno bounding joyfully beside her, their footsteps clicking against the stone path in perfect harmony.

Dante wrapped his arm around Anna’s waist, pulling her close against his side as they watched the little girl and the dog run toward the gate.

The iron gates were wide open, letting the warm morning sunlight pour in, illuminating a life that had finally found its way home."
