Chapter 7 - Ambush at Pier 14

The warehouse smelled of rusted iron, rotting fish scales, and the unmistakable, sharp ozone tang of fresh chemical explosives.

Dante walked down the center aisle between two rows of decaying industrial gutting tables. High above, yellow mercury-vapor lamps buzzed, casting long, sickly shadows across the concrete floor.

At the far end of the warehouse, standing atop a raised metal catwalk, was Viktor Vance. He was flanked by six heavily armed mercenaries dressed in dark combat gear. Beside him on the catwalk rested five black reinforced Pelican cases—the suitcase bombs wired with digital LED countdown timers.

""Right on time, Dante,"" Vance called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal ceiling. ""I have to admit, I didn't think the great Dante Moretti would risk his neck for an engineer and her bastard brat.""

Dante didn't flinch. He set the silver briefcase down onto a rusted steel table. ""The drive is here. The bearer bonds are worth four million. Enough for you to get on a freighter to South America and never look back.""

Vance laughed—a grating, ugly sound. ""Do you think I'm an idiot? The moment I step down from this catwalk, your snipers blow my head off. And the moment you walk out that door, you dismantle my life's work.""

Vance pulled a small black remote control with an extended antenna from his jacket pocket. ""I was never going to negotiate with you, Dante. The plan hasn't changed. The Harbor Gala was just the grand finale. But blowing Dante Moretti into a thousand pieces inside my warehouse? That makes me a legend tonight.""

Vance slammed his thumb down on the red detonator switch.

Nothing happened.

The red LED timers on the Pelican cases remained frozen at 00:00.

Vance clicked it again frantically. ""What the hell? What did you do?!""

""Enzo Bellini sends his regards,"" Dante said calmly, pulling a customized Sig Sauer from beneath his coat. ""The entire pier is inside a five-gigahertz dead zone, Viktor. Your toys are paperweights.""

""Kill him!"" Vance screamed.

The warehouse erupted into gunfire.

Dante dove behind a solid steel sorting conveyor just as a hail of automatic rounds tore into the concrete where he had been standing, sending sparks and ricochets whistling through the air.

""Bruno! Flank right!"" Dante commanded.

The Malinois broke into a lightning-fast sprint, darting under the shadows of the rusted conveyor belts. The dog vanished into the darkness, reappearing five seconds later behind the metal stairs leading to the catwalk.

A mercenary leaning over the railing to aim at Dante never saw the attack coming. Bruno launched himself five feet into the air, clamping his jaws onto the shooter’s forearm and pulling him violently over the safety rail. The man crashed twenty feet down onto the concrete floor with a sickening crunch.

At that exact moment, the corrugated metal side doors of the warehouse blew inward with concussive flashbangs.

Angelo and Rico led the assault team inside, their suppressed rifles firing in tight, controlled bursts. Two of Vance's men dropped instantly. The remaining guards scrambled for cover, returning fire blindly into the smoke.

Dante rose from behind the conveyor, firing three rapid shots. The mercenary covering Vance’s escape route crumpled to his knees.

Vance panicked. Abandoning his men and the bombs, he scrambled across the elevated catwalk toward the rear emergency exit leading directly out over the dark water of the harbor.

""He's running for the boat!"" Angelo shouted over the gunfire.

""Secure the crates!"" Dante roared back, already taking the stairs three at a time. ""He's mine.""
