Chapter 4 - The Blackmail Formula

The study was bathed in the warm amber glow of a crackling fireplace when Anna knocked gently on the heavy oak door two hours later.

She had showered and changed into clean, oversized cotton clothes Mrs. Gable had provided. Her damp hair was pulled back into a simple clip, revealing the high cheekbones and delicate, determined lines of her face. Without the grime and grease of the warehouse, she looked remarkably young, though the shadows under her eyes remained deep.

""Sophie is sound asleep,"" Anna said softly, pausing at the edge of the plush Persian rug. ""She hasn't slept that deeply in six months. Your dog is lying across the foot of her bed. He wouldn't let me move him.""

""Bruno takes his guard assignments very seriously,"" Dante replied, gesturing toward the leather armchair across from his desk. ""Sit down, Anna. Drink this.""

He slid a crystal glass filled with two fingers of amber bourbon across the desk. She hesitated, then sat, wrapping both hands around the glass. She didn't drink, but she let the heat of the glass warm her fingers.

""Three years ago, David—my fiancé—was an investigative accountant for the city port authority,"" Anna began, her voice barely louder than the fire. ""He found an offshore shell network funneling unregulated raw precursors through Pier 14. Nitrates, peroxides, stabilizers. Before he could file his report with the federal task force, a semi-truck ran his sedan off the Tobin Bridge. The police ruled it a drunk-driving collision with an unidentified runaway vehicle.""

Dante nodded slowly. ""Standard Vance protocol. Silence the whistleblower, make it look accidental.""

""A week after David's funeral, Viktor Vance came to my apartment,"" Anna whispered, her voice shaking with suppressed rage. ""He laid a folder on my kitchen table. It had ultrasound pictures of Sophie. It had photographs of my mother’s nursing home. He told me that David owed him two million dollars for 'lost cargo.' It was an outright lie, but he said if I didn't work off the debt using my chemistry degree, Sophie wouldn't live to see her first birthday.""

Dante leaned forward, his elbows resting on the desk, his eyes burning with a dark, predatory fire. ""What did he make you do?""

""He set up a clandestine synthesis lab in the sub-basement of the old cold-storage facility,"" she said, shuddering. ""He brought in raw, impure shipments of chemicals stolen from agricultural suppliers. He made me purify and stabilize them into high-yield explosive matrices. He told me it was for private mining operations in South America. But I knew better.""

""HMTD,"" Dante murmured.

""Yes. It’s odorless, undetectable by commercial airport sniffers, and packs twice the shattering velocity of commercial dynamite. But last week, I overheard his second-in-command talking on a satellite phone. They weren't shipping the compounds to South America. They were manufacturing five compact suitcase charges.""

Anna looked up, meeting Dante's gaze with desperate urgency.

""They're planning to detonate them here, Dante. In the heart of the city. At the annual Harbor Gala this Saturday. Every major civic leader, every high-ranking police commissioner, and every rival family head will be in that ballroom.""

""Including me,"" Dante said calmly.

""He wants a total power vacuum,"" Anna cried. ""He’s going to wipe out the city's leadership in one blast and take control of the waterfront syndicate by force. This morning, I tried to steal the batch manifests and the detonator frequency codes onto a flash drive so I could run to the FBI. That’s why those men were in my apartment. I hid the drive inside Sophie's shoe when I took her to work because I had nowhere else to keep it safe!""

Dante sat back in his chair, the pieces snapping together with terrifying precision. Bruno hadn't just smelled the residual dust on the sneaker; his military training had locked onto the hidden micro-compartment hollowed out in the heel where the trace vapors were leaking from the USB drive.

May you like

""Where is the flash drive now, Anna?"" Dante asked.

""It's still in Sophie's sneaker,"" Anna said, her eyes welling with panic. ""On your fireplace mantel downstairs.""
