Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Water

By the following evening, a thick, freezing fog rolled off Massachusetts Bay, cloaking the waterfront in a blanket of gray mist.

Inside the Moretti estate, the atmosphere was tight as a drawn bowstring. Dante had spent the entire day coordinating with his most trusted lieutenants. They didn't call the federal authorities—not yet. Vance had informants inside the municipal port authority; any official movement would trigger an early detonation. Dante had to spring the trap on his own terms.

Upstairs in the guest suite, Anna was pacing the floor. Sophie was sitting on an plush rug, coloring a picture of a giant brown dog with wings.

""Mommy, is Bruno an angel dog?"" Sophie asked, holding up a crayon.

Anna stopped, her heart aching as she looked down at her daughter. ""Why do you ask that, baby?""

""Because he protects us,"" Sophie said matter-of-factly. ""And Dante told me that bad guys are scared of angels.""

The door opened, and Dante stepped in, wearing tactical black gear beneath a heavy wool pea coat. Bruno trotted in beside him, outfitted in a lightweight Kevlar vest with tactical handles.

""It's time,"" Dante said quietly to Anna.

""You're going alone?"" Anna asked, her voice tight with panic.

""Never alone,"" Dante replied. ""Angelo and twelve men have already surrounded the perimeter of Pier 14. Enzo is jamming the local radio frequencies from a surveillance van two blocks out. When Vance tries to trigger those charges remotely, the signal will hit a wall of static.""

He knelt down in front of Sophie, coming to eye level with her just as he had at the front gate the day before. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the small pink sneaker, perfectly cleaned, repaired, and polished.

""Here,"" Dante said, holding it out. ""Bruno asked me to return this to you. He says he's very sorry for being a thief.""

Sophie’s eyes went wide. She grabbed the shoe, inspecting it with extreme seriousness before slipping it onto her foot and tying the laces into a messy double knot.

""Tell him he's forgiven,"" Sophie declared, patting Bruno on the head. ""Because he’s a good boy.""

""He is,"" Dante agreed. He looked up at Anna, his dark eyes softening for a fleeting second. ""Stay in this room. The locks are reinforced steel. If anything sounds wrong, Mrs. Gable has the combination to the panic bunker beneath the wine cellar.""

""Dante,"" Anna whispered, reaching out on instinct and catching his sleeve.

He paused, looking at her hand on his dark coat.

""Come back,"" she said, her voice fierce and pleading. ""Don't... don't let David's death and everything we went through be for nothing. Come back alive.""

Dante covered her hand with his for a brief second. ""I have no intention of dying tonight, Miss Carter. I have a little girl's shoe collection to protect.""

He turned on his heel and strode down the hallway, Bruno falling into step beside him like a silent shadow.

Twenty minutes later, two black SUVs rolled without headlights onto the rain-slicked concrete of Pier 14. The old fish processing plant was a rotting industrial monolith, its corrugated metal siding groaning in the ocean wind.

Dante stepped out into the mist, the cold salt spray stinging his cheeks. He carried a silver metal briefcase in his left hand. Inside was the encrypted flash drive and a dummy set of financial bearer bonds.

Behind him, Angelo signaled through the gloom. Positions set.

Dante pushed open the rusted side door of the processing plant and stepped into the darkness.
