Chapter 9 - The Confession in the Rain

Forty-eight hours later, New York was consumed by a media frenzy.
Headlines across every national newspaper screamed the shocking news: Billionaire Executive Arthur Vance Arrested in Federal Racketeering Sting; Caldera Crime Syndicate Dismantled Across Tri-State Area.
Cross Maritime had emerged completely untouched. In fact, federal investigators had publicly commended the corporation's internal compliance department—which I had personally managed—for providing the smoking-gun financial trails that exposed Vance’s treason.
The war was over. The shadows that had haunted Damon’s empire for a decade were finally burned away into the light.
It was raining heavily when I walked out of the federal courthouse in lower Manhattan after giving my final deposition. The reporters had been kept behind barricades across the street. The autumn rain fell in steady, gray sheets, washing the grime from the city sidewalks.
Standing beside a sleek black town car near the steps was Damon.
He wasn't wearing a tactical vest or hiding behind a ring of armed security guards. He was dressed in a sharp three-piece navy suit, carrying a large black umbrella, looking every bit the proud, untouchable titan he was born to be.
When he saw me, his entire face illuminated. He walked up the stone steps, tilting the umbrella forward to shield me from the downpour.
""Ms. Russo,"" he murmured, his eyes filled with warmth and an intimacy that made my knees weak.
""Mr. Cross,"" I replied, a small, teasing smile touching my lips. ""I believe your legal troubles are officially over.""
""My legal troubles, yes,"" Damon agreed softly, stepping closer until the umbrella created a private, sheltered world just for the two of us amidst the bustling city. ""My personal troubles, however, are just beginning.""
I looked up at him, my heart fluttering. ""Oh? And what troubles might those be?""
Damon reached out, taking my cold, gloved hand in his warm grip. ""My executive secretary is far too competent. She saved my empire, restructured my security, and completely captured my heart. And now, she's technically unemployed because I abolished her position this morning.""
I gasped, pulling back slightly. ""You fired me?""
""I eliminated the job,"" Damon corrected, a breathtaking, genuine smile breaking across his handsome features. ""Because I refuse to let the woman I love spend another day taking notes at my meetings, bringing me coffee, or worrying about corporate hierarchy.""
The rain drummed steadily against the taut fabric of the umbrella. The roar of Manhattan traffic faded into a quiet whisper.
""Damon...""
""I love you, Elena,"" he said, speaking the words clearly, boldly, without hesitation or pride. ""I loved you when you were shouting at me in Miami about sunscreen. I loved you when you walked ten blocks in the freezing cold just to defy me. And I love you enough to spend the rest of my life proving that you will never have to be afraid again.""
Tears welled in my eyes, spilling over my lashes as I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face against his warm throat.
May you like
""I love you too,"" I whispered against his skin. ""You terrifying, stubborn man.""
Damon laughed—a rich, deep, joyful sound I had never heard in the two years I worked for him—and spun me around in the pouring rain, holding me against his chest as if he would never let me go.
