Chapter 7 - The Betrayal Unveiled

Morning broke over the New Jersey safehouse with grim clarity.
Damon had barely slept, spending the night pacing the perimeter and reviewing security footage with Marcus. I woke up on the leather sofa wrapped in his heavy wool blanket, the faint scent of his cologne comforting me against the lingering terror of the shootout.
I walked into the study with two cups of black coffee. Damon looked up from his monitors, his face etched with dark fury, but the moment his eyes landed on me, his expression softened instantly.
""You should still be resting,"" he said, taking the mug from my hand and brushing his lips against my knuckles.
""I couldn't sleep,"" I admitted, looking over his shoulder at the flashing screens. ""Have you found out how Caldera knew our route from Brooklyn? Only four people knew we were leaving the terminal.""
Marcus entered the room at that exact moment, his face paler than usual. In his hand, he held a decrypted digital tablet.
""Boss,"" Marcus said quietly. ""We ran the trace on the cellular ping that signaled Caldera's strike team.""
Damon turned, his voice chillingly cold. ""And?""
""It didn't come from Brooklyn,"" Marcus swallowed hard. ""It came from inside our executive board. Arthur Vance.""
I gasped. Arthur Vance was the vice chairman of Cross Maritime—a man who had been Damon’s father's business partner for over thirty years. He had attended every holiday gala, smiled at every company dinner, and practically watched Damon grow up.
""Arthur,"" Damon repeated, the word tasting like venom. ""He sold the route.""
""Not just the route,"" Marcus continued grimly. ""Caldera promised him fifty-one percent of the maritime holdings once you were eliminated. And Sal gave him a condition: Elena was to be handed over as leverage to keep your loyalists from retaliating.""
The room seemed to drop below freezing. Damon didn't shout. He didn't slam his fist on the desk. He simply stood up, straightening the cuffs of his fresh black shirt with terrifying composure.
""Damon, what are you going to do?"" I asked, gripping his forearm.
He looked down at me, his eyes dead and merciless. ""I am going to end this war, Elena. Once and for all.""
""You can't go back to Manhattan alone,"" I begged. ""It's a trap. If Arthur and Caldera are working together, they are expecting you.""
""They are expecting a corporate CEO trying to protect his stock value,"" Damon said, reaching into the desk drawer and pulling out a heavy ceramic weapon along with several fresh magazines. ""They forgot that before I wore suits, I ran the docks with my bare hands. Marcus, assemble the first tier. We take the Caldera warehouse in Queens tonight.""
""Wait,"" I said, stepping between him and the door. ""If Arthur thinks he's winning, he'll be expecting a call from Caldera confirming you're dead. We use that.""
Damon paused, looking at me with renewed intensity. ""Go on.""
""Don't attack blindly,"" I said, my strategic mind taking over despite the fear clawing at my throat. ""Let them believe the ambush succeeded. Let Arthur sign the emergency transfer paperwork at the headquarters tonight. Catch them in the open, with federal agents and local authorities already monitoring their paper trail. You destroy Caldera's street muscle, but you bury Arthur under the law. That way, Cross Maritime stays clean.""

A slow, prideful smile spread across Damon’s face. He looked at Marcus, then back at me.
""God, you are brilliant,"" Damon whispered, capturing my mouth in a hard, searing kiss. ""Marcus, prepare the trap. We do it Elena's way.""
